Hotel Das Rübezahl
Description
The family run Boutique Hotel Rübezahl is located in Schwangau close to Füssen in the country of mountains, Castles, and lakes—opposite the famous Royal Castle Neuschwanstein. This romantic hideaway features two restaurants, a large wellness area, a private spa and yoga facilities.
The house is managed by Giselle and Erhard, with son Alexander in the third generation. The family is originally from Silesia, where, according to myth, the mountain spirit and eponym Rübezahl did his mischief. The Thurm family and their team created an exceptional and sustainable feel-good location for their guests with many remarkable details.

King's Nest, Alpenglühen, Tower Suite. The 54 deluxe rooms and design suites are designed as individually and fancifully as their names: in the traditional and cozy Allgäu styles coupled with a contemporary feel for living and elegance. But there is also a lot of space for relaxing and enjoying yourself in a warm and cozy ambience at the À la carte Restaurant Lous II, the Gourmet Restaurant Gams & Gloria or the wellness area with several saunas, a heated outdoor pool, a panoramic deck and a saltwater grotto.
Nevertheless, it is not only worth discovering the hotel, but the surrounding area at length. On hiking or cycling tours in summer, while skiing, snowshoeing and wildlife feeding in winter, or with sheer fun driving in the electric Porsche Taycan 4S. One special destination for excursions here is the hotel's very owned alpine hut at 1,320 meters, Rohrkopfhütte, which has its yoga platform.
Only a 15-minute walk from the hotel, it buzzes and rumbles mightily. There are six bee hives with about 300,000 bees tending the natural compensation area of the Hotel Rübezahl containing rare wild herbs, orchids, and other protected plants, with a view of Neuschwanstein Castle. Beekeeper Sebastian holds weekly informative tours on the life of bees.
And psst… gladly, the Rübezahl team will help you plan marriage proposals

Story & Philosophy
The history of the Hotel Das Rübezahl begins in the 1950s, when Hildegard and Herbert Thurm opened a small inn with guest rooms on the site of the current hotel in 1959.
As displaced persons from the Riesengebirge, or the Giant Mountains in Silesia, the family first tried to settle in the Ruhr area, but then decides to make a new start in the Allgäu. Despite the initial mistrust of the locals and a very short tourist season, the Thurms start to build something new with ambition and an iron will.

The family’s origins in Silesia are to thank for the name Das Rübezahl: the mountain spirit Rübezahl is an integral part of the legends and myths of the Siebengebirge (sometimes referred to as the Seven Mountains).
However, the hotel name is the only reminder of the past. Apart from this piece of history, the Thurm family is all about progress and comfort. Das Rübezahl was the first hotel in the area with hot water in the guest rooms. Other innovations such as rooms with showers, modern toilets and televisions were also considered a sensation in the early sixties. These milestones are a success for the whole family, as everybody helps out to the best of their ability. Only the eldest son Erhard was allowed to go to secondary school. Something he appreciates very much and follows up with an apprenticeship as a chef and hotel management school in order to be able to give back as much as possible to his parents and the business.
Giselle Gorian Teixeira also recognised that great goals can be achieved through hard work and ambition. The 1984/85 Brazilian figure skating champion decided to move to Füssen for the sake of the sport, as she finds that it offers the best training conditions. In addition to the financial support she receives from the German Skating Association, Giselle decides to earn something on the side. She sells souvenirs during the day – and works as a waitress at Das Rübezahl in the evening. For Erhard Thurm, the young chef at the hotel, it was love at first sight.
They married in 1990 and their son Alexander, born in 1995, was involved in the hotel from an early age. Whether as a toddler in the playpen behind the reception desk or later as a helping hand. After school, Alexander studied hotel management and gained valuable experience in leading hotels in Europe. However, there is no question in his mind that he would continue the family history and Das Rübezahl. His sister Franziska, a successful cross-country skier for many years, also decided to study hotel management. Only brother Stefan takes a completely different path and becomes a horticulturist.
Giselle and Erhard with their son Alexander run the hotel as the third generation and continuously worked to expand it. In the 1990s, the number of beds increased from 35 to 115, the country house was built and the inn was transformed into a restaurant. There are also changes to the wellness options: the sauna with solarium becomes a small spa, which is later expanded by the Therme Romana.
Further innovations or extensions include the Residence with the Princes’ Suites built in 2004 or the extensive refurbishment of the main hotel in 2010 with the construction of the new Orangery. In 2014, 19 more double rooms and suites, the conference room, the new lobby, the panorama sauna and a completely new beauty area were added.
