Story & Philosophy
The story of the Waldhotel Fletschhorn Saas-Fee is recorded in a double-volume guest book that begins in 1906.
Back then, a family built three mountain inns in Saas-Fee to cater for the first tourists who came to the village. Guests in the mountain inn included hikers and mountaineers, and ski tourers in winter.

- Waldhotel Fletschhorn architecture is devoid of wooden hut romanticism. Back in 1906, a stone house was built, simple and without many embellishments. It has grown to its current size through various renovations. The largest part was built in the 1980s.
- On the previously used areas, the plan is to create more rooms by adding floors and making use of roof space, while replacing the concrete of the last major remodeling, used to pave the patio and courtyard, with planting and/or natural materials. The pavers will be recycled on site and used as a substructure.
- In the future, the new owners will also rely on a material concept based on local wood and stone, which are also processed in the region.
- At 1800 m altitude, in a high-alpine environment, you perceive nature much more immediately than you would anywhere in the valley.
- Over the centuries, the life was characterized by deep respect for nature. The citizens of Saas-Fee made a pilgrimage to Rome in the twenties to ask the Pope to pray that the glacier would not continue to spread and destroy the village. Since then, the talk is no longer of glacier growth, but of glacier shrinkage. In fact, every day the glacier is melting, constantly reminding everybody how the climate is changing.
- The Fletschhorn team has deep respect for nature and wants to contribute to change the climate situation positively. By the way, Saas-Fee is perfectly suited for gentle ski tourism, for instance high altitude tours and snowshoe hiking.
- In animal and plant protection, the hotel sees an indirect and a direct opportunity to exert influence. Immediately, due to its location, the hotel is a meeting point for the animal world of the surrounding forest. Deer, chamois, squirrels are among the permanent guests. There are no herbicides and pesticides used around the house, so that insects can also feel comfortable and provide them with food.
- There are three bee colonies below the hotel, which use the meadows around the hotel for their excursions.
- The owners of the Fletschhorn would like to contribute indirectly to the protection of animals and plants by using organic food, thus promoting species-appropriate husbandry and organic farming.
- Water is supplied to the hotel from an artesian spring located at an altitude of 2100 meters. No pumping is required for the water to reach the hotel, which is distributed by natural pressure. In order to ensure perfect water quality, a purification system was installed that disinfects the water entering the hotel reliably by means of UV light.
- In future, heat will be removed from the wastewater by a heat exchanger and then discharged into the municipal wastewater treatment plant.
- Rainwater and surface water is collected in an underground reservoir and used as service water.
- A local energy supplier generating the electricity in the nearby hydroelectric power plant.
- Saas-Fee is an Energy City, and is powered 100% with renewable energy
- LED lighting, use of energy efficient appliances and machines and avoidance of stand-by consumption.
- The upcoming renovation of the building will include a photovoltaic system and generate electricity through a small CHP plant. The resulting waste heat, accounting for 70% of the total energy production, will supply the hotel with heat and hot water.
- In Switzerland, there is a structural surplus of wood, since the industrial use of renewable wood has declined significantly. Hence locally produced wood chips from weak and thinned wood for heat and power supply.
- Heat exchangers using the waste heat from the refrigeration units and the laundry significantly reduce energy and heat consumption.
- All the goods need to be brought to the hotel by electric vehicle through a forest path, as well as all the waste must be disposed of in this way. Therefore, the owners place great importance on preventing waste in the first place.
- Packing waste is separated so that it can be completely recycled.
- Organic waste, e.g., from the kitchen is processed in a digester to soil, which is used around the hotel.
- Refundable bottles or glass packaging, mineral water is bottled by the hotel itself _ avoidance of transportation and packaging waste.
- Toiletries not in mini-packs but in reusable packaging.
- Bathing shoes can be taken home by guests
- Culinary was and is an important part of the Fletschhorn experience. The restaurant has had a Michelin star and has been awarded several times as the best restaurant in Switzerland.
- The new concept of the hotel is focused on organic, regional and seasonal food.
- Wines are 75% from the region
- Collaboration with a regional aid organization in the Upper Valais.
- Support of a farming project of the Franciscans in the North of Kenya, school and home for AIDS orphans.
