GILIS SEAS – Social & Environmental Awareness and Sustainability
- Gili Lankanfushi strives to protect the environment, the resort operation is dependent on the environment and tries to minimize the impact on nature
- The policy is still in development stage and consists of three components
- Purchasing focus on local and fair trade products
- Resort operation in compliance with the natural surroundings (social and environmental)
- Carbon footprint, waste management and waste disposal
- Sourcing locally whenever possible in order to cut down transport emissions and support local businesses
- Reuse, recycle, reduce, use of products that are biodegradable or can be reused or recycled
- Packaging is minimized
- Fair working conditions, including fair wages and local recruitment by the chosen suppliers
- Reduce water and energy consumption
- Reduce the use of plastic whenever possible
Architecture
- The architecture of the hotel is designed to blend in with the natural environment of the island in terms of scale, materials and texture of building
- Deep roof overhangs provide shade for the widow reducing the heat from sunlight
- Local material, which is skillfully prepared by the Gili carpentry team, is used whenever possible; e.g. driftwood benches, coconut ice holders, jungle stick bicycle racks, palm leaf roofing
- Overwater structure minimizes the building capacity on the island and allows less disturbance, more vegetation and wildlife
Energy
- Tropical climate compatibles in guest facilities
- Passive cooling and lighting used indoors
- Power is generated on the island in combination with solar and diesel, the generators are connected to a hot water system to warm up the hot water for the island (not guesses villas due to the location) without use of additional boilers
- Lighting is controlled through time reels, no bulbs over 40 W, and wherever possible energy bulbs
- Air condition units are set to 27°C by default
- Laundry in use during daylight to avoid waste of power for tumble driers
- Procedures and controls systems for the routine maintenance of facilities and equipment to ensure optimal performance and maximum longevity
Water and Chemical
- Gili desalinates ocean water through reverse osmosis-the water is desalinated in 4 stage process, re-mineralized and bottled in reusable glass bottles
- As this is also a power consuming process, it is necessary to save as much water as possible by e.g. using water saving shower heads and taps and encouraging guests to use less water
- No plastic bottles of water are purchased to minimize the carbon footprint
- Housekeeping aims to minimize the use of harmful substance, primarily products from Ecolab are being used for laundry
Food and Beverage
- The food and beverage department of Gili is committed to painting the superior guest experience while working hard to reduce the impact on the environment
- The chefs are working closely with the gardeners to ensure that most of the need herbs, leaves and vegetables
- Close cooperation with purchasing department to ensure sourcing is locally and environmentally friendly
- Training of hosts to apply eco friendly practices in F&B daily operations
- Encouraging guests and hosts alike to participate in all green initiatives
Waste Management
- Reuse and recycling principles
- Hosts are encouraged to sort and depose waste in the correct bins
- The Eco Centre, where the waste is treated, consists of a mulching and composting facility, can-compressing facility, a glass crushing machine, which can later be used as aggregate for concrete, as well as an on-site incinerator
- Used water from boats and generators is sold to locals to purify
- Waste Water is being treated in a centralized sewage plant. Waste water and sewage from the villas and resort facilities are collected by a small-bore sewage network. The module plant, which breaks soils up to 2,5 mm size, works with bacteria and microbes form, fed by the oxygenated water, which in turn allows the bacteria to eat up the sewage. There are 3 steps and with the last a small amount of chemical is added to disinfect the water. The treated water runs trough a pipeline to the outside of the lagoon and is safely disposed there. Water samples are regularly sent to an independent laboratory and the result is monitored to ensure environmental safety
Social Responsibility
- Constant training for the staff
- Focus on local recruitment
- The company provides a regular ferry free of charge to Male and Himmafushi for the staff to see their families or go shopping or meet friends. People living on Himmafushi can also use the ferry.
- Working with the neighborhood island Himmafushi and supporting the school
- Gili is paying the salary of a full time English teacher in the school of Himmafushi
- Supporting the local communities
