General Information about the Seychelles

The Republic of Seychelles is located in the heart of the Indian Ocean. Approximately 1500km east of the African mainland, the island state topographically belongs to Africa. The Seychelles consist of 115 islands, 42 granit and 73 coral islands. Around 90 per cent of the Seychellois live on the biggest island Mahé. With little over 90.000 inhabitants, the republic has the smallest population of all independent African states. The french-based language of the Seychellois is referred to as Seychellois Creole or seselwa; but also English and French are official languages.

History of the Seychelles

The seafarer 500 years ago named the Seychelles ‚garden of Eden‘ - and still today it truly is a nature paradise. A first sighting of the island group has been mentioned in 1509 by the Portuguese Vasco da Gama. Eventually, in the 18th century,Francetook the island group in possession and named it after Jean Moreau de Séchelles, Minister of Finance of the french king Louis XV.

Environmental commitment at the Seychelles

Today, the island paradise is one of the leaders in respect to sustainable tourism. In accordance to the strict Environmental regulations, every tourism project is examined taking into account the public and conservationists. Nearly 50 per cent of the land mass is under environmental protection. Hence, one can find breathtaking intact nature on this special piece of earth. The Seychelles impress with diverse flora and fauna, the island state is home to three species of giant turtles, numerous bird species as well as a great diversity of plants and trees.
