Sustainable Hotel in Berchtesgaden lets the chicks live
At the Berghotel Rehlegg there's news from the Augsburger Hühnern.
Full Henhouse
The animals have settled in well at the partner farm, Haus Hohenfried in Bayerisch Gmain, and feel so comfortable that there are already plenty of offspring. There is a lot of activity in the stable and on the lush green meadow where all the chickens are allowed to be on the loose, including the male chicks, which are not killed as usual.
The Augsburg Huhn
The Augsburger Huhn is the only Bavarian chicken breed and is highly endangered. In 2009, there were only a few animals left in Germany and therefore this was just the right project for Berghotel Rehlegg. In autumn 2018 the hotel purchased 15 chickens and a rooster from a breeder near Augsburg. Since then, the female and male animals live in a stable with plenty of space to run around and green areas for pecking.
Demeter quality
In contrast to the broiler chickens, which live only 30 days or organic chickens, which live 80 days, the Augsburger chickens are considered to be joyful-growing, weatherproof and resistant and reach at least 11 months of age. It is a so-called "Zweihuhn" or dual-purpose chicken because it is an excellent supplier of eggs and meat.
Like all chickens, the Augsburger Huhn is very sociable and spends the day mainly looking for food together. In industrial animal husbandry systems, it cannot, or only to a very limited extent, live out its needs. This is mainly due to cage management and limited space. In fattening houses, a number of 40,000 chickens is no longer a rarity. Unimaginable for Rehlegg to obtain meat from there! The animals of the hotel live absolutely species-appropriate lives, their meat and eggs have Demeter quality and are of the best taste. Taste for yourself!
The Augsburger Huhn is the only Bavarian chicken breed. It is highly threatened with extinction. In 2009 there were only a few animals left in Germany. Just the right project for us!
