Landgut Stober – a historical place, a place where political decisions were made. Here cornerstones for democracy and a health system were set as well as social standards and sustainability redefined. It was a place of science and research, politics and beyond, known for its architecture, horticulture and Dendrology and of course for the surrounding landscape.
In 1866 the Borsig family came into possession of the estate located on the Groß Behnitzer lake and already that year a cattle barn was added, that was air-conditioned with biomass. The estate was more or less self-sustainable and had an irrigation system, that was only in use in an area where surplus water could still flow back into the lake on its own. Very progressive ideas, and something that continues still to date.
In 2000 Michael Stober, contractor for restoration of old buildings and former art photographer acquired the estate and saved it from decay. He was actually searching for a home for himself but when he first saw the property he knew that it was a magical place, a place full of spirit and atmosphere.
It was his vision that turned Landgut Stober into the most sustainable privately owned and managed hotel in Germany and the first bio certified Hotel in Berlin/Brandenburg. The hotel has a photovoltaic system to generate electricity, a rainwater system for all toilets and a wood heater for wood production. All rooms are electro smog reduced and don’t have Wi-fi but individual internet connection.
Other innovative ideas include the use of crooked floor boards instead of straight ones, thus saving 20% of waste material. The carpet in part of the public areas is made of bio-degradable material. The kitchen is using only seasonal, market-fresh, local produce and keeping guests health as well as the environment in mind, products are primarily organic.
