Once upon a time…

… in the sleepy Austrian mountain village of Kals villagers had no other option but to go on long journeys to find work. Some even had to leave their home for good, as no opportunities for work could be found in the near distance.

That all changed completely when in 2012, like in a fairy tale, the prince arrived in Kals to build his castle. The prince in form of Heinz Schultz, Austrian businessman and real estate developer, brought life and jobs to Kals, without changing the landscape too drastically. The Gradonna****s Mountain Resort Châlets & Hotel is a resort consisting of 42 châlets and a four-star superior hotel with 130 rooms, located on a hill overlooking the village.

The exterior of both the châlets and the hotel is covered in wood shingles, blending harmoniously with the surroundings. The glass tower is hardly noticeable because of its location directly in front of the dark mountain and at the same time the views from the tower suites are more than breathtaking.

The car-free resort with a spa area of 3000 m2 leaves nothing to be desired for. Be it simply getting away from it all in the solar heated swimming pond, pampering yourself with natural products by alpienne, pure Altitude or BABOR or exploring the limits of your own capacity when ascending the Grossglockner with local guides. From the stressed manager to the woman of the world – thanks to all that is on offer in the resort the guests are a real melting pot of cultures and ages.

Also particularly suitable for families, its location in the national park Hohe Tauern offers countless hiking and biking tours, where you can discover the flora and fauna as well as the animal world of the Alps. The châlets are perfect for a cozy family vacation – far away from the mass tourism one can concentrate on the essentials and devote ones time entirely to the family. Should parents need a break a children’s club is on offer from sunday to friday and the hotel offers the following discounts for children: kids from 0 to 3 sleep for free in their parents room, kids from 3 to 6 pay 27 euro and kids from 7 to 18 still get 50% off.

To add to the all around feel food factor at the hotel a visit to the Gradonna****s Restaurant is highly recommended. Chef Michael Karl pampers guests with highly creative combinations of east tyrolean and modern cuisine. Breakfast and dinner are also available for non-resident guests.

Despite the size of the resort, one thing that is of particular value is sustainability. With its own shingle factory and own water source, the Gradonna****s is almost self-sufficient when it comes to heat- and water supply. During construction only native woods were used and even some of the plates in the restaurant are made from the marble that was mined from the rock during the construction. And to make the environmentally friendly travel even easier the shuttle from Lienz train station is free.
