What is a “diffused hotel”? The Relais del Maro in Liguria!
What if a hotel was made up of more than one property spread across one location? What would it be like, if there were several properties in one village that were strung together into a collection of charming accommodations? The Relais del Maro in Borgomaro, Liguria, is exactly that. They call it an „Albergo Diffuso“, which means it consists of several properties, three houses in this case, that are scattered across the picturesque village of Borgomaro in Liguria. The Scalambrini Family worked closely with local authorities in skillfully renovating and restoring the historical buildings dating back to the 19th century. The eco-hotel offers 14 rooms, divided between the main house, the old butcher’s, the Casa del Borgo and the Casa del Fienile. The main property houses the reception, the restaurant, pool and garden. What a refreshingly different way to stay!
When entering the hotel lobby, there’s a relaxing holiday feel all round. A heartfelt welcome makes you feel at home straight away. Every room is different: whether it’s exposed beams, flowing white curtains on a window with a view of the river Impero, or romantic four poster beds and free standing bath tubs, it always comes with the highest level of comfort.
It’s easy to feel transported back to a different time while staying in these historic buildings. Maybe that’s why it is so relaxing: a kind of time travel, from which you return slightly changed. The locals are so friendly and chatty; a truly authentic Italian experience.
A highlight of course, given we’re in Italy, is the food! The ingredients used in the meals served at Relais del Maro all come from local suppliers and the menu is a wonderful reflection of local specialties, like the delicious vegetable pie. The breakfast buffet is extensive and afternoon tea or coffee is an Italian dream!
