Green Pearl by the North Sea: Hotel Niedersachsen on Sylt, Germany

If you are planning a sustainable holiday this summer (or spring?), I have one thing to say to you: Sylt! We have a green pearl on this German beach haven of an island where you can sustainably relax and find some real „me“ time.

The Niedersachsen Hotel has a proud 100 year history. This eco-hotel has been owned by the Scheidt Family since 1925; they have renovated the property with much love and great consideration for the environment and turned it into a sustainable jewel. Low energy consumption and maximum reduction of CO2 emissions are just two ways how the hotel looks after the environment.

With its wood clad facade and striking architecture the Niedersachsen has a modern Nordic feel that compliments its environment. And situated in the center of the quiet Westerland area, it is just 100 meters from the wonderfully long and sandy beach.

The hotel’s credo is something aptly called „cocooning“: a feeling of comfort and coziness, a place where you can forget the stresses of the daily grind. The 24 rooms and suites provide comfort within a contemporary interior design. What we love: there is no Wi-Fi; the hotel was purposely built to avoid electromagnetic pollution, all in the name of sustainable relaxation. If you need Internet access though, there’s no need to panic: you can borrow a cable from reception anytime.

The sauna, with its relaxation area in the „Light Court“ offers more chill out time after a day walking on the beach or cycling along the sea promenade.

Spend the day in the cozy reading room when it’s stormy outside. It stocks over 800 books, from classics to novels and thrillers. Or play a board game with your family. Add a steaming hot cup of East Frisian tea to the equation and you have the perfect day, even without seeing the sun.

In good weather, it’s all about beach life on Sylt. If you feel culturally inclined, join one of the tours of Westerland to learn about the history of this former spa town. And if you’re looking for a great activity away from the beach, look no further than the Aquarium or water park, both of which are enjoyed as much by the grown ups as by the kids.

If you’ve stayed at the Niedersachsen Hotel, you’ll understand me: there is nothing else I want for my summer but that „Sylt Feeling“!
