Organic wine at Lake Constance: 40th anniversary of Hotel Burgunderhof

There is no better place to enjoy the view on Lake Constance with a glass of wine in your hand than Hotel Burgunderhof. Here, homemade organic wines are part of the concept. The sustainable hotel, owned by the winemaking family Renn, is located in the fishing and winemaking village Hagnau on Lake Constance – surrounded by romantic orchards and vineyards. Since its foundation 40 years ago, the former guesthouse developed into an exceptional hotel that combines comfort with style.

Health, relaxation and enjoyment play an important role at the Burgunderhof. Intended exclusively for adults, it provides not only homemade organic wines and spirits, but also a well-conceived relaxation program. The spa area inspired by Balinese tradition and the hotel garden are perfect places for relaxing and being pampered. The hotel’s concept is characterized by its philosophy, aimed at sustainability and holistic health. That is why the food at the breakfast buffet is 100 % organic and mainly regional and you can enjoy fresh fruit and vegetables from its organic garden.

From farm to sustainable hotel

At the age of 25, Heiner Renn took over the agricultural business from his father and soon switched from crop cultivation and animal farming to wine- and fruit-growing. In 1977, a guesthouse was affiliated and dedicatedly run by Heiner Renn’s wife Andrea. Due to the couple’s determination and creativity, the former farm developed into the first organically certified hotel and winery on Lake Constance. Moreover, due to numerous energy saving measures and a solar thermal system your stay is entirely climate-neutral.

Following the tradition of distillery and winery

Heiner Renn also continued his ancestors’ tradition of distillery – so successfully that by now he ranks among Germany’s best distillers. His pomace brandy can easily compete with Italian high quality grappa. Not only the fine brandies, but also the wines produced by family Renn have been awarded numerous prizes. When Renn started growing wine organically 25 years ago, he encountered a good deal of unbelieving amazement. Nevertheless, within a period of only five years he developed into a successful organic winegrower.

Facing the future with optimism

In order to support young wine-growing professionals, the family founded the Daniel Renn Stiftung Deutschland. In remembrance of their son who was killed in an accident and had completed an internship with a renowned winemaker in Nappa Valley before, the foundation gives young winegrowers the opportunity to travel to the US and expand their professional knowledge. Despite the painful incident, the family managed to face the future with optimism. With their daughter Julica Renn the next generation is already part of the hotel management. And her latest creation of a special gin indicates that with her the next 40 years of the Hotel Burgunderhof will equally be characterized by creativity, style and enjoyment.
