An eco-hotel in a magical setting – 20th anniversary of Schloss Wartegg

If you always wanted to stay at a real castle, the eco-hotel Schloss Wartegg in Switzerland is the perfect place for you – including a sustainable concept, an exciting cultural program and the hotel’s own flock of sheep. This year, the hotel in the historical castle celebrates its 20th anniversary.

A castle steeped in history as well as a sustainable hotel

Schloss Wartegg has an eventful history. It was built in 1557 by Kaspar Blauer von Wartensee and used as refuge, among others for Empress Zita, the last Empress of Austria. During the last reconstruction in 1929 the “Turquoise Bath“ and the staircase were integrated, after that the castle deteriorated increasingly. Finally, it was awakened from its slumber by the Mijnssen family in 1994: they bought the castle and carefully rebuilt it into today’s sustainable hotel – respecting the principles of building biology and using natural textiles, natural colors and lime plaster, sandstone from the neighborhood and solid wood from the region and even from the castle’s own park. For power generation, they even built an own small hydroelectric power station.

A useful flock

The castle’s own flock of sheep is a special highlight and at the same time a particularly good example for the ingenuity and commitment of the hosts Imelda Senn and Richard Butz. The idea arose to vivify the historical park. The sheep are grazing here between spring and autumn, thus preserving the landscape and making lawn mowing dispensable. What’s more, with this flock of sheep Imelda and Richard make sure that an endangered breed, “Bündner Oberländer Schafe”, survives. And if you have fallen in love with the soft fur: the sheep’s wool is used to produce blankets that are for sale – so you will sleep as comfortably at home as at the castle.

Cultural program in a magical setting

In addition to wide views over the English Garden and the adjoining Lake Constance, Schloss Wartegg provides a diverse culinary and cultural program. Its own cultural association organizes concerts with distinguished artists or insider tips from the regional cultural scene. And this year you can combine a visit at Schloss Wartegg with one of the anniversary activities. On April 28th, 2018, there will be a seedlings and plant market, on June 10th a garden festival including two open air concerts right in the park and on September 30th the autumn festival including market stalls with regional specialties. You will find further information at Schloss Wartegg’s website. Have fun!
