Vacation at a mountain lake: swimming against the backdrop of the Alps
How about a swimming vacation in the mountains? Beach holidays by the sea are fine, but mountain lakes have so much to offer as well: their quiet, crystal-clear water, shimmering in the most beautiful shades of green and blue, reflects the mountain ranges, as if it were just waiting to be stirred up by you. And they will certainly refresh you, because mountain lakes are always a little colder than the sea. These three mountain lakes in different Alpine regions have won our hearts – you will soon understand why.
Family-friendly swimming holiday
The Dürrensee is the most altitudinous bathing lake in Europe, located 1,400 meters above sea level in the Italian Höhlenstein Valley. It is ideal for a family holiday, because only very little cold mountain water flows in, so that it is relatively warm for a mountain lake. A path runs around the entire lake and invites you to take beautiful walks. And next to the lake you will find a climbing garden, where the climbing wall rises almost vertically. Those who climb up high have a unique view of the lake and the mountain panorama. The Lago di Landro, as it is called in Italian, is a wonderful destination for a 4-hour hike with starting point at the Wellnesshotel Leitlhof in Innichen. The path runs between the two nature parks Sextner Dolomites and Fanes-Sennes-Braies and takes you directly to the lake. Beautiful!
Refreshment and wellness in a postcard setting
There is no better place for relaxation than the Hintersee near Ramsau in the National Park Berchtesgadener Land. As if enchanted, it lies amidst forests and mountains. The crystal-clear mountain lake, reflecting the trees and mountain peaks, is one of the cleanest lakes in Germany. On its banks begins the so-called magic forest, inviting to walks. Our tip: If the water is too cold for you to swim, you can also rent rowing boats and explore the lake dry-shod. Just drift around and enjoy the fantastic scenery from your boat! Nearby is the Berghotel Rehlegg, where you can get pampered with regional dishes, wellness treatments and yoga at the end of the day.
Healing climate, swimming and fishing
Lake Weißensee in Carinthia, Austria, has everything you could possibly wish for in a mountain lake. It is considered the cleanest lake in the region, surrounded by conifers and a spectacular Alpine panorama. The healing climate of the most altitudinous lake in the Weißensee Nature Park at the foot of the Gailtal Alps provides relaxation and recreation. And a lot of fun for young and old – it is not only perfect for swimming, but also for diving, cliff diving or floating on its surface in a rubber boat. And it makes angler’s hearts leap for joy.
