Island Tourism, but make it sustainable

When you travel to an island, you shouldn't ignore the impact of your travels. Tourism has many effects on the country and the people who live there, and not all of them are positive. On islands, the effects are often bigger. 

Arrival

It takes more time to travel to an island than it does to vacation on the mainland. In most cases, it is not possible to simply hop on a train and then get off at the destination. The Maslina Resort and the Eco Aparthotel The Dreamers Club are both located on the Croatian islands of Hvar and Korcula, which are accessible by ferry. Thus, it is still possible to make the journey by train and ferry sustainable. 

If you were looking to travel to the Seychelles, for example, and wanted to go to Cerf Island Resort, the only option would be to fly. However, even such a trip can be sustainable if you stay long enough. As a tourist, you support the local economy much more and thus ensure a positive effect of your trip. At the same time, you get to know the country and the people in an entirely different way.

Special experience: The 4 Rivers Floating Lodge in Cambodia can only be reached by boat. But the lodge itself is the island. The luxury tents are on rafts anchored on the river. An island trip of a special kind. 
 

Transportation

Naturally, an island is surrounded by water. That means that all products and foodstuffs that are not produced on the island itself have to be delivered by boat. This requires fuel and emits CO2. 

To minimize such transport routes, many Green Pearls® partners rely on growing their own food. Keemala on the Thai island of Phuket, for example, obtains most of its food from its garden. The Zeavola on Koh Phi Phi and the Tongsai Bay on Koh Samui in Thailand also grow fruit, vegetables, and herbs. This also enables the hotels to guarantee their guests that they have only the best, organic produce on their plates. 

Garbage and Waste

Maldives tourism, in particular, is repeatedly criticized for generating masses of garbage. But not only do these islands have to deal with the waste of tourists. Indonesian islands such as Bali face a similar problem. 

Sustainable resorts such as the Gili Lankanfushi in the Maldives, the Puri Dajuma on Bali or the Eco Beach Tent by Billiton on the Indonesian island of Billiton are committed to reducing waste. They set a good example by avoiding plastic products as far as possible and promoting waste separation and recycling. Gili Lankanfushi has also purchased a Rocket Composter to recycle organic waste. The humus produced as a result has since been used to create a garden that supplies the hotel with fresh food. 

Local Economy

However, island tourism does have a positive impact on some aspects of local culture. Tourism is one of the most important sources of income for many islands. Tourism can help economies grow and become more diverse. Tourist facilities such as hotels or tour operators bring work to regions that otherwise offer few prospects. Most of the employees at Puri Dajuma are from the region. The OCEANO Health Spa Resort in Tenerife is one of the largest employers in the area and most of the team is from the region. 

Car-free island of Juist

One approach to sustainable island tourism is to consciously choose a sustainable island. Juist in the German North Sea is such an example. The island aims at being carbon-neutral by 2030. With a species-rich flora and fauna, it could almost be called a biodiversity hotspot. The wealth of species can be experienced during a mudflat hike, a bike ride across the island or a walk through the island villages. By the way, you don't have to worry about cars on Juist: The isle is completely car-free. Only doctors, the Red Cross and the fire department are allowed to use motorized vehicles. Even garbage collection is done with horse-drawn carts.

Traveling sustainably on an island

Tourists can take an active role in making their island travels fair and environmentally sound. Open eyes and a willingness to put more time into research are all that's required. Is there an alternative to the flight? Which travel provider supports the island in its sustainable efforts?

There are hotels in many wonderful places on the planet that are hosting wedding celebrations and attaching great importance to a respectful treatment of nature and people. We introduce some of them:

Thailand: A wedding in a magical forest, with a drum parade and a personal wedding consultant

It is THE perfect wedding for many people: feet in the sand, a view of the ocean, a private little wedding ceremony and then indulging in culinary delights. THAILAND is one of those countries where these dreams may become reality. Due to the paradisiacal nature, friendly people and the cultural diversity.

At the Keemala resort, for example. The Keemala Resort is a villa wonderland nestled in the lush hilly landscape of Kamala on the Thai island of Phuket. The Zeavola provides two different ways of entering into the bond of marriage: A classical Thai ceremony, where staff members of the resort, in traditional Thai dress, perform a parade of drums, which is followed by chants and blessings of Buddhist monks. At the end of the ceremony, the couple will plant a love tree and enjoy a festive dinner and champagne celebration in the evening with their guests. 

The blessing Ceremony and the exchange of vows, in Western style, are conducted by either a “Master of Ceremonies” person or, if a formal Christian wedding ceremony is required, by a Priest. The celebration continues with a champagne reception and the cake cutting. The sustainable luxury resort Zeavola, located on Phi Phi Island, sits on the tranquil white sand Laem Tong Beach and is renowned for its vast array of diving opportunities in the Andaman Sea.

At Tongsai Bay on Koh Samui, a tropical island, all is set for a dream wedding day as well. Like at Zeavola and Keemala, guests can get married in traditional Thai or Western ceremonies. A dedicated wedding consultant is on duty in advance to clarify any open questions. The 5-star facility comprises 83 suites, villas and cottages, which are located in a spacious and lush green garden area. The units are spread in hillside locations all around the private bay with fantastic views. The hotel is one of the most romantic hideaways on the entire island.

Historic charm in Havel land, a castle at Lake Constance and imposing mountain peaks

The charm of the Stober country estate is evident immediately from behind the imposing red brick portal with old sandstone sculptures. The old lodging house, stables, the distillery, the granary, high old trees at the lakeside. This place is full of atmosphere and spirit. The estate is located amidst a park landscape in Havel land at the Groß Behnitzer See, approximately 20 kilometers west of Berlin. 2021 the hotel was awarded as the  greenest boutique hotel in Europe. Many bridal couples appreciate the special festive-historical ambience at the Wartegg Castle Hotel. Situated in an English park, this former castle with its white shining walls is just a few minutes' walk from the Lake of Constance. The festive and dining hall with magnificent views of lake and park can accommodate about 50 people with dance floor. The marriage ceremonies can be held in the banquet hall as well. For a small ceremony, there is the “Silent Room” and of course the castle garden, which provides ample space for everyone. The chef de cuisine prepares proposals for banquets with much attention to detail—on request also a vegan gourmet menu including a selection of fine organic wines. A carriage ride through the vineyards between Lake Constance and the Appenzeller Vorderland region represents an exceptional experience. It is a romantic ride past the vineyards of Thaler Rebberge, the luminous lime rocks of the “steinigen Tisch” and the rich green meadows, the blue Lake Constance in sight.

You can also start out into the bright future here: at Naturhotel Aufatmen in Leutasch, Tyrol. A venue for a small but fine wedding celebration with a private swimming pond and a view of the Öfelekopf and the Ahrnspitze. This family-run wellness hotel specializes in celebrations for up to a maximum of 40 people and boasts creative vegetarian/vegan cuisine and a modern, homey ambience. Next to the restaurant, the yoga room is transformed into a dance location.

Seychelles, Maldives, and Bali: Exotic dream destinations

Get to know the cuisine and culture of the Maldives

At the Gili Lankanfushi in the Maldives, guests can learn how to prepare a traditional Maldivian fish curry or tempura and sushi. Ancient wheat, sourdough and traditions - the fine art of baking bread

High-quality ingredients, centuries-old preparation methods and regional specialities can make bread something very unique and special. In times of automated quick-bake machines and bakery chains, unfortunately these qualities are very often pushed into the background. Fortunately, traditional bread baking has been kept alive, especially in the countryside. Three of our Green Pearls® partners have decided to share their knowledge beyond the region and put fresh loaves of bread in the oven together with their guests.

At the Naturhotel Outside, Chef Sepp personally shows guests how to prepare aromatic, home-baked bread. The secret of the old family recipe: ancient wheat from East Tyrol. This is rolled, seasoned and kneaded, just as the Ganzer family has been doing for generations. As a "treat", the participants of the baking course each take home two loaves of the freshly baked fragrant bread!

Sourdough is the guest of honour at the bread baking courses at Biohotel Sturm in the Rhön. At the baking event with Barbara, guests learn everything there is to know about baking with sourdough in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. During the course, guests prepare their own which is then baked in the wood-burning oven. The crust becomes perfectly crisp - a “Rhöner Plotz” that you’ve prepared yourself - and so delicious that usually only a small piece survives the journey at home!

Bread baking is also a beloved tradition and a labour of love at the Biohotel Grafenast. In winter, the schedule is weekly, and in summer, according to demand. The little ones are also welcome to lend a hand and proudly present their home-baked loaf of bread afterwards. The joint activity strengthens awareness and appreciation for the staple food and its preparation.

Cooking course in Thailand: The right choice of ingredients and a little something ‘extra’

Thai cuisine is known for its use of fragrant herbs and spices. The art of creating culinary delights through the careful blend of ingredients is mastered to perfection by the chefs at Tongsai Bay. And they are very happy to pass on their know-how to their guests! A cooking workshop at the resort usually starts with a visit to the hotel's garden. Here, the cooking professionals explain the various uses of fruit, vegetables, herbs and spices and show which ingredients can be freshly harvested for the upcoming cooking session. Back in the kitchen, participants learn how to make their own curry paste. The chef himself guides guests step by step through the preparation of a 4-course meal, including a curry - using the curry paste they just made themselves. The most important thing that the Thai cooking professionals teach their students: The perfect ratio of spices, salt, acid and sweet. Once everything is ready, it's time to enjoy!

It is also possible to book a private cooking lesson. An additional guest is then most welcome to join and enjoy the meal.

Log Cabins and a Tiny House - Alpine Holiday Home Getaways with Style

The possibilities for getting active in the Alps are almost endless. This is also the case in Pfunds, where the Summit Lodges Pfunds is located. The Spiss family, operators of the sustainable, Canadian log cabin style holiday homes, hold one thing particularly close to their hearts: they want their guests to experience the natural and cultural region of the Tyrolean Oberland as closely and honestly as possible. Some of their recommendations include a rafting tour on the Inn River which flows through Pfunds or canyoning! Abseiling down vertical rock faces and jumping into crystal-clear pools surrounded by a pristine landscape: personal challenge, adventure and immersive nature experiences are the special attraction here. Things are a little quieter in the Radurschltal, the largest uninterrupted Swiss pine forest in the Eastern Alps. In the low mountain landscape of the Rhön lies a unique Green Pearl - the old kitchen house of the Biohotel Sturm near Mellrichstadt. The number of people around the world choosing a vegan diet is steadily increasing. There is also a growing awareness of a plant-based diet among those who do not completely abstain from animal products, and many hotels around the world have responded to this development.

The following examples showcase how it is possible to combine diverse and delicious vegan cuisine at the highest level with a thoroughly sustainable hotel concept.

Vegan in South Tyrol

Respect for nature and people, mindfulness and health is the guiding principle of Eco Park Hotel Azalea. The cuisine of the family-run organic hotel in the old town of Cavalese is plant-based and organic for ethical reasons. Inspired by nature, such as the clear, pure waters of the Val di Fiemme and alpine wild herbs, along with the culinary traditions of the Dolomites, Azalea follows a fully sustainable approach in its restaurant, which includes a wide range of raw food and vegan dishes. The hotel works predominantly with local suppliers, such as a small flour mill that uses stone mills to grind ancient Italian grains into fresh, high-quality flour. Guests will find a wide variety of vegetables and fruits on Eco Park Hotel Azalea's daily menu, creatively prepared and delightfully combined with whole grains, legumes, local herbs and spices, and a dash of internationality. Colourful, beneficial and delicious.

Vegan on Phuket

Thai cuisine is aromatic and varied. With lots of vegetables, fresh herbs and spices: "a feast for the senses". This is also the culinary motto of the Keemala Resort on the Thai island of Phuket. At the heart of the colourful, fresh cuisine of the eco-luxury resort are the resort's own gardens, where much of the food the kitchen requires grows. In addition to herbs, fruits and vegetables, Keemala grows its own mushrooms and experiments with alternative cultivation methods, such as hydroponics. Both restaurants of the sustainable resort offer a variety of vegan dishes. In addition, guests at Keemala can opt for the "Healthy Living Cuisine", which includes raw, macrobiotic and gently cooked dishes.

Vegan on Koh Samui

At The Tongsai Bay on Koh Samui, the resort's own vegetable, fruit and herb garden is also the main source of their vegan cuisine. Jackfruit grows here and is becoming increasingly popular as a meat-like product. The flesh of the plant is used in Tongsai Bay in the legendary 'Jack Fruit Burger', which is served in Poh-lad Beach Bistro. Whether it's a traditional Thai dish at Chef Chom's Thai Restaurant, Asian tapas at The Butlers or a private candlelit dinner on the beach, vegan dishes are always on offer at The Tongsai Bay.

Vegan in the Black Forest

The Hotel SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA selects its ingredients according to the strict Bioland guidelines, Germany's leading organic farming association. The suppliers farm in a life cycle-friendly manner and without synthetic fertilisers. Following the principle of a "planetary health diet", the hotel focuses on creative vegan dishes and recipes. You can get inspired and try them out yourself, both at the buffet and as a selection of dishes in the à la carte restaurant. Options such as the vegan avocado and tomato tartare with sweet and sour carrot, sesame oil and crispy parsley or the butternut squash steak with rosemary ginger chutney, caramelised apple slices and beetroot risotto are just some of the dishes on offer.

Vegan on the Baltic Sea

Gut Nisdorf Estate sits just 250 m from the shoreline on the German coast of the Baltic Sea. As a natural part of healthy and enjoyable organic cuisine, vegan options are always included at Gut Nisdorf. Furthermore, 100% of the ingredients are certified organic. The day begins at Gut Nisdorf with a hearty, delicious breakfast, and a fruit basket is always available in the dining room. In the afternoon, depending on the weather, homemade cake is served on the terrace in the sunshine or by the fireplace in the Nordic stormy autumn or winter. In the evening, guests choose from meat and vegetarian / vegan dishes from the organic buffet. Salads and vegan desserts are always included. Gut Nisdorf has the organic claim not only for food, but for all areas of the hotel, such as building materials, furniture and bed linens. The business produces less than 8 kg CO² per guest and day. That is five times less than the average hotel in Germany.

Vegan in Croatia

Guests of the Aparthotel The Dreamers' Club on the island of Korçula can choose whether they want to cater completely for themselves in their studios or make use of the hotel's services. Breakfast, served in the garden lounge or in the flat, is vegan on request. This also applies to the tapas prepared according to local recipes. All ingredients are mainly sourced from local, organic and sustainable producers and the herbs used come from the hotel's own garden. From these, the hotel team also creates healing teas and its own herbal lotion that brings relief to guests who spent a little too much time in the sun.

Vegan in the Maldives

Vegan menus in a class of their own are also available at the luxury eco-resort Gili Lankanfushi, in the Maldives. Whether breakfast, lunch or dinner, the menu has a special focus on plant-based products. Fruit and vegetables are grown in one of the largest fruit and vegetable gardens in the Maldives and the chef offers cooking experiences directly in the garden. Vegan scallops are prepared here according to their recipe. The crowning highlight for all fans of plant-based cuisine are the vegan multi-course menus. The Gili kitchen team composes up to 10 purely plant-based courses into a 'Gili Vegan Experience'. So that guests know exactly where the ingredients come from, the menu starts with a visit to the organic garden, accompanied by the chef himself. The range of raw food, vegan and vegetarian dishes on offer is set to be expanded even further.

Vegan on Phi Phi Island

Celebrity chef Satya Beeknoo from Zeavola is an excellent example of how hotels with a sustainable focus integrate vegan cuisine as an important pillar in culinary diversity. Beeknoo, who enjoys taking the time to cook something special for his guests, follows a completely sustainable approach. Fish and vegetables mainly come from regional suppliers, farmers and fishermen. In the kitchen, processes are constantly being optimised, and the kitchen team has already reduced the monthly consumption of cooking oil by more than half. Through ideas such as the reusable transport boxes or a composting machine to reduce organic waste, Beeknoo has created sustainable standards in the multi-award-winning eco-resort in Thailand.

The awareness of eco-friendly, seasonal and regional food as well as environmentally conscious business practices are all part of the DNA of the sustainable Green Pearls® Hotels. This is especially important for travellers who seek vegan options.

Whatever the season, the view of Zermatt's mountains from the Mountain Ashram Spa is impressive. Just like the wellness and spa area of the CERVO Mountain Resort itself, inspired by Japanese onsen, Bhutanese hot stone baths and the northern European art of sauna. In October 2021, the Mountain Ashram Spa was named "Best Holistic Spa in Switzerland 2021" by the International Spa & Beauty Award. The spa area at Naturressort Schindelbruch has been awarded with '5 Wellness Stars'. And rightly so, because a bathhouse with a view of the forest, a large sauna area, a separate wellness area for families and a sports area leave nothing to be desired across 2,500 m2. In the evenings, there is even a blazing fire in the sauna area. For its treatments, the Schindelbruch uses Pharmos Natur products, a green, luxury natural cosmetics made line from Sacred Plants, grown in harmony with cosmic principles. Wellness and pure nature!

The Mawell Resort in Langenburg, Hohenlohe, offers a truly natural wellness experience. The green resort is located in the middle of an ancient natural stone landscape, surrounded by million-year-old rock. The hotel's 4,500 m² indoor and 7,500 m² outdoor wellness area includes a tower deck 200 metres above the Jagst Valley with a tower sauna and pool, an infinity forest pool, an ice fountain, a salt grotto and a wellness slope with beach chairs. Interest in sustainable accommodation has increased in 2021

The awareness around sustainability has increased significantly, especially with regard to regional tourism, which is a point that Kristin Vogel, Head of Marketing Mawell Resort Langenburg, notes. Guests are (re)discovering their home countries and the many great things they have to offer, and this is reflected both by longer stays along with a greater interest in regionality. In the restaurant sector, a strong increase in demand for vegetarian and vegan alternatives as well as regional and seasonal dishes is noticeable, adds Vanessa Baumann, Marketing & Sales Mawell Resort. The trend towards more plant-based dishes and healthier options has also been seen by Tammy Gan, Marketing Communication Manager of Gili Lankanfushi in the Maldives, “More and more guests are travelling with a stronger social and sustainable awareness. For example, they stay longer in one place and make fewer trips per year.”

Marion Müller from the Lifestylehotel SAND on the Baltic Sea does not believe that the pandemic has greatly changed the awareness of sustainability among her target group, but has definitely strengthened it. Due to the travel restrictions, however, there was also demand from guests who are not normally concerned about sustainability.

Domestic tourism on the rise

Travel restrictions and an increased need for safety have made many people prefer to holiday in their own country. Ilona Jeckelmann, Project & Marketing Manager of CERVO Mountain Resort in Zermatt, is pleased to see the increase in the awareness that one's own homeland has a lot to offer. As has the appreciation of local products and crafts. Fabienne Anthamatten, hostess of the Hotel Bella Vista Zermatt, confirms this: "Most of our guests are currently Swiss. And there we notice that there is a great appreciation for our sustainable thinking and actions in the business. However, we are explicitly appealing to sustainably-minded guests with our offer. We very much hope that 2022 will allow even more international tourists to find their way to Zermatt.

The high appreciation for sustainable accommodation from local guests has also given Schloss Wartegg on Lake Constance a healthy number of bookings. Richard Butz is sure that in the coming year, too, the hotel will be filled primarily by domestic tourists who value a safe and personalised journey, the hotel's hygiene concept, the beautiful nature and good, healthy food. The hotel is therefore currently hiring more staff. With a spacious marquee planned for aperitifs and small celebrations, Schloss Wartegg will also continue to provide an alternative to indoor celebrations in the long term.

Wellness & health were the winners of the year

The high demand for people to be able to simply switch off and take some time out for themselves has led to an enormous popularity in wellness and healthcare offers. Natural cosmetics, soothing massages, yoga and fasting offers were very well booked by all Green Pearls^® partners at the end of the year. Fabienne Anthamatten is therefore very pleased that the Hotel Bella Vista was able to expand its wellness area during 2021: “With the addition of our Arvenstube with waterbeds, the Alpine Spa Bella Vita is now complete and geared towards nature-conscious guests seeking relaxation.” The Naturresort Schindelbruch also appeals to this clientele with its brand new Landresidenz, which includes four private spa suites.

The Berghotel Rehlegg also boasts an update: the hotel has used the lockdown period to develop its own herbal cosmetics line. These are produced in-house under the strict conditions of the European Cosmetics Regulation. For the health of their guests, all mattresses in the hotel were also replaced. Every room now has Hästens mattresses, made entirely from sustainably sourced natural materials.

High demand for personalise offers

Holidays in your own holiday home or appartment: the trend of living the day according to your own rhythm and being independent of predefined hotel structures has strengthened in 2021 and will continue to do so in 2022 according to our Green Pearls® partners. No matter whether in front of an impressive mountain panorama, as with the Summit Lodges Pfunds and the holiday appartments of The Peak Sölden furnished in stylish alpine style, or the original holiday home complex MANOAH Häuser am See in Thüringen. The demand, especially for high-quality accommodation that fits authentically into its surroundings and offers a natural experience, is growing strongly. Günter Beer from the Pou de Glac holiday home near the French border and the Costa Brava notes: "We were able to realise our vision of sustainably built accommodation in the middle of nature and have already noticed after the first few months in operation that we have hit our mark. Our guests not only appreciate the secluded location and the historical ambience of the former estate, but are also very interested in our sustainable energy concept and the environmentally friendly restoration works.

Some of the Green Pearls hotel partners who offer separate accommodation units on the hotel grounds, such as the Hotel Sturm in the Rhoen Mountains with its kitchen house located in the middle of the hotel garden or the SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA, also focus on the trending topic of individuality and independence. Stephan Bode, Managing Director of the SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA confirms the high number of reservations of the self-sufficient accommodation units next to the main hotel and adds: “The demand for our flats was extremely high this year. We notice that guests, of course, still like to take advantage of the hotel's offers and want to be pampered in the wellness area or in the restaurant.”

Sustainability also scores in the luxury segment

The fact that ‘pampering’ and individuality go hand in hand is also evident in the luxury segment. Offers such as the LENI MOUNTAIN Chalet in Sölden, which includes its own natural swimming pond, sauna area and concierge service, or the villas of the Keemala on Phuket with their own pool were very well booked in 2021 – for as long as travel restrictions allowed. Tamm Gan from the sustainable luxury resort Gili Lankansfushi in the Maldives says: "In view of the ongoing pandemic, we have noticed that the demand for holiday destinations with open spaces has increased significantly. We have also seen that more and more families are booking together with us - travelling together but wanting to stay separately. However, there are also individual travellers who want to escape the stress of their everyday lives who have increasingly returned to enjoy what we have to offer.”

“We were able to score points this year, especially with the resort's generous space, plenty of privacy and our 'Mindful Luxury' concept. For our conscious interaction with nature and individual offers, we have received a lot of encouragement and were able to record an excellent booking situation, especially in summer,” explains to Denis Martin, General Manager of the 5* star Maslina Resort on the Croatian island of Hvar.

Trust and authenticity convince in all areas

The transparency of services, the appreciation of nature and a social togetherness are appreciated by guests of all sustainable accommodations. Kristin Okelmann from the eco-hotel Okelmann's is also of this opinion and summarises the development as follows: “More and more guests who are very interested in sustainability and have a corresponding lifestyle are coming to stay with us. In 2022, a sound hygiene and safety concept, a responsible approach to the pandemic, sustainability and individuality will continue to count. Nature, tranquillity and short travel distances have played a large role this year and will continue to do so next year.”

In the new Ashram SPA of the CERVO Mountain Resort, only natural cosmetics and care products are used, all of which are free of animal testing, gluten and silicone, are vegan and non-comedogenic. In the open spa area, designed with natural materials, there is enough space for self-discovery and deep relaxation. In the alpine herb garden, during a Bhutanese hot stone bath, a Tibetan honey treatment or in the northern European sauna landscape - here everyone finds peace, relaxation & mindfulness in their own way.

In the Black Forest, beauty lies in nature

The Hotel SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA has implemented sustainable action across almost 100% of the value chain. This also applies to the 1000 sqm spa area with mineral thermal swimming pool & saunas. The spa team uses only natural cosmetics made from organic, plant-based ingredients for all spa treatments. The Dr. Hauschka Skin Care treatment concept with selected medicinal plants aims to strengthen the skin's own natural processes and protect it from external influences. The facial and body treatments which follow the Pharmos Natur method are carried out with a fresh aloe vera leaf and can be booked as a relaxing massage, stimulating detox or anti-stress treatment as required. Both care lines are also available to take home for pampering and self-care moments at home.

Relaxation and mindfulness on the Atlantic: feel the power of the elements

The idea of sustainability at the OCÉANO Health Spa Hotel on Tenerife is not limited to the use of organic products or the saving of resources, but also includes a holistic view of people themselves. The medical care treatments of the health hotel are tailored to the needs of the individual in order to provide lasting benefits when it comes to regeneration, rediscovering inner balance and rebuilding one’s own resources. Specially prepared meals for the guest, individual treatment plans and recommendations for the long-term strengthening of the immune system are all part of this treatment approach. Always in harmony with the ever-present, natural power of the water and the mountains. The OCÉANO Beauty Spa also relies on nature-inspired methods and gentle treatments with high-quality organic products that are individually tailored to the guest. Wellness at Gili Lankanfushi - Total relaxation above the sea

Tongsai Bay - Tropical plant paradise and healing herbs

The spa experience at the Tongsai Bay Resort on Koh Samui - which is also very committed to sustainability and has preserved the original landscape - is somewhat more exotic. The wellness oasis of Tongsai Bay is embedded in the paradisiacal nature of the private bay. A wide range of therapeutic, healing and restorative treatments are available to guests in the spa, as well as in the private spa cottages. Signature treatments such as the "Samui Dream", a traditional Thai remedy that combines coconut oil and local herbs to repair sunburnt skin, or the more than two-hour relaxation treatment "Return to Prana", provide a natural and lasting spa experience. The deep knowledge of the healing and caring power of the local plant world has been passed down through generations at Tongsai Bay. And those who prefer to unwind in private can simply relax in the free-standing bathtub on the balcony or terrace of their hotel room.

Authentic nature experience at the Naturresort Schindelbruch

For a break from everyday life that is a little closer to home, the Wellnesshotel Schindelbruch in the southern region of Harz is the place to go. A holiday for the soul, the eyes and the body. In the spa area, which has been awarded with the '5 Wellness Stars', guests will find everything they need for a relaxing wellness holiday on 2,500 m²: a bathhouse with a view of the forest, a large sauna area, a separate family wellness area and a variety of beauty treatments, massages and sports offers. The spacious room concept and the natural materials which have been used create a private, cosy atmosphere. Pharmos Natur products are used in the treatments, an eco-luxe natural cosmetic brand made from Sacred Plants which have been grown in harmony with the rhythms of nature.

Authenticity and living up to the claim of a nature resort is at the centre of all efforts at the Schindelbruch Spa. Guests can sense this and consciously enjoy it. In the evening, by the blazing fire in the sauna village, it becomes really cosy and a “little time out” becomes a “big treat”.

Barefoot Holidays in the Maldives

Let your mind wander to the eco-luxury resort Gili Lankanfushi on the private island of the same name. The six-star hotel is located about six nautical miles from Malé in the North Malé Atoll in the Maldives. The 45 villas built in the lagoon above the sea are accessible via jetties, blend harmoniously into the lush vegetation of the dream island, and guarantee a barefoot holiday in a class of its own. Guests are served fresh seafood from the region, as well as vegetables and herbs from their own organic garden. The menu features plant-based menus inspired by the culinary tradition of the Maldives. Holidaymakers can gain an insight into the ecosystem of the Indian Ocean on environmental tours with the resort's own marine biologist. The luxury resort also supports the Coral Lines project, founded by marine biologists there in 2014. Its goal is to promote the regeneration of the vulnerable coral reef ecosystem.

With the so-called Gilis Seas Program, the resort has set itself sustainability guidelines to protect the environment and its social responsibility as an employer. Almost all employees are locals who are trained and developed. Whenever possible, local and fair-trade products are sourced to keep transport distances short and to support the local communities. Suppliers are selected based on whether they pay their employees fairly and offer good working conditions. There is a free ferry to Malé and Himmafushi for resort staff. The hotel is also involved in the Himmafushi school and pays the salary of the English teacher there.

Paradise experiences on tiny Seychelles island

A stay at the Cerf Island Resort with its 24 luxurious villas on the Seychelles island of the same name also promises a holiday close to nature. The boutique hotel is located only ten minutes by boat from the main island of Mahé at the entrance to the Sainte Anne Marine Park, a nature reserve. Cerf Island is only about one and a half kilometers long and about one kilometer wide. In contrast to the main island of the archipelago, holidaymakers can unwind and enjoy the Robinson Crusoe feeling in the idyllic seclusion and family atmosphere of the tiny islet. The resort is popular with honeymooners and newlyweds. A visit to one of the restaurants is an unforgettable experience – and not only for the romantics. Directly on the beach, with a view of the sea and the setting sun, guests are served local and seasonal organic food as well as fair trade products fresh from the market. A visit to the nature spa in the four-star hotel, which impresses with its local architecture and offers holidaymakers an authentic Creole experience, another special treat. The underwater world on Cerf Island is especially impressive, with its increasingly regenerating coral reef: a dream for divers and snorkelers. Family-run eco hotel on Koh Samui

The family-run boutique hotel Tongsai Bay on the Thai island of Koh Samui, nestled in untouched nature, also promises a very special kind of holiday. Since its opening in 1985, the hotel has been committed to a sustainable philosophy. The idyllically situated five-star hotel with 83 suites, cottages, and villas is tucked into a hillside with sea view of the private bay and spread over an area of 28.5 hectares in the midst of lush gardens. This is where hotel founder Khun Akorn Hoontrakul realized his vision of a sustainably managed holiday resort. His goal was to build a resort in harmony with nature. Insecticides and chemical fertilizers are forbidden, and to date no trees have been felled. Plastic is banned throughout the complex. Straws made from lemongrass are used as an alternative to plastic straws. Waste is separated, and organic waste is used as fertilizer. The hotel staff make their own cleaning agents for the bathrooms from fermented pineapple peel. And the coffee grounds are used for exfoliation in the hotel's spa.

Many employees have been working there for more than 30 years; 95 percent of the team is Thai. There is regular training and further professional development. During the corona-related lockdown, the staff received free meals, and some salaries were paid. The eco-hotel is also involved in various social projects and supports, for example, the local animal shelter, schools, temple projects and "Sisters of Samui". In this project, more than 1,000 homeless members of the community are provided with food every day.

Fascinating insights and views of rural Morocco

A stay at the Kasbah du Toubkal in the middle of the national park of the same name in Morocco also promises an extraordinary holiday experience. The Berber-run hotel is located only 60 kilometers from Marrakech at 1,820 meters above sea level at the foot of the Jbel Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa in the middle of the High Atlas Mountains. The exposed yet secluded location promises fantastic views. Holidaymakers can reach the refuge from the mountain village of Imlil on foot or on the back of a mule.

The Kasbah du Toubkal offers holidaymakers insights into traditional Moroccan life and promises unforgettable authentic impressions. The hotel is also deeply socially committed and is a co-founder of the project "Education for All" (EFA). This has set itself the goal of enabling all children to attend school. Especially in the rural regions of Morocco, this is often denied to girls in particular; the male offspring are preferred. This is exactly where EFA comes in and provides girls with free accommodation in the school's own dormitories. The project started in 2007 and has positively influenced the view of the locals, who no longer hesitate to provide schooling for girls as well.

Forays through woods and meadows in search of something new

For Kristian Knölke, chef at HUBERTUS unplugged, cooking is the art of surprising guests with fresh local produce. All of which is complemented by quality products from all over the world.

His path led him via Kitzbühl to Sylt and to star chef Alexandro Pape where he discovered the world of Haute Cuisine in the north. At Tegernsee, he learned to reinterpret traditional Bavarian cuisine in a casual and playful way with Euro-Toques star chef Matthias Rödiger. He continues to refine his skills at the HUBERTUS. Kristian Knölke has a feeling for authenticity and extravagant combinations of fresh, aromatic delicacies from the region. Freshly presented and served à la minute. His passion for fine cuisine is based on curiosity and the desire to create something new while remaining boundlessly free to make his guests happy.

Food defines our lives

The philosophy of the sustainable luxury resort Gili Lankanfushi in the Maldives is based on the understanding that our life is only as good as the quality of the food we eat.

Chef Hari has been a key member of the culinary team at Gili Lankanfushi for more than 10 years. The experience there has allowed him to mature and today he leads a multinational team of 54 people, including 26 chefs from 10 countries, each with their own culture and many unique gastronomic ideas. He describes his cooking style as simple, local, and creative. And he does not want to be pigeonholed.

Chef Hari loves vegan

Born in South India, his passion for cooking began at a very young age. He has refined his knowledge and skills and today his special interest lies in vegan cooking. The large organic garden is also under his supervision, care, and further development. For example, he has initiated a natural composting project in which worms transform food waste into organic fertilizer. He is responsible for the cultivation of organic herbs, vegetables, and fruits with which he prepares his signature dishes such as Aloe Vera Ceviche, Avocado & Garden Leaves Gazpacho and Citrus Salad. In the largest organic garden in the Maldives, more than 20 different vegetables such as spinach, radish, and eight different types of lettuce along with 14 different herbs including Thai basil, lemongrass, and rosemary are grown.

Hari is also committed to sustainability in his private life. He spends much of his free time with the marine biology team implementing the latest research and environmental protection measures, both on the island and in the surrounding areas.

Vegan inspirations by Hari from the Gili Lankanfushi

Pan-fried vegan scallop with cauliflower couscous, pumpkin puree, curry foam

1-2 servings, preparation time: 10-15 minutes

Ingredients and preparation

Vegan scallops:

• 250g white radish (cook and cut like scallops)
• Fry in a hot pan until both sides are golden
• Raw cauliflower couscous
• 75g grated cauliflower
• 15g tomato finely diced and peeled
• 10g chopped parsley
• 10ml extra virgin olive oil
• Lime juice
• Salt

Pumpkin puree:

• 100g Fried pumpkin
• 50ml coconut milk
• 10ml olive oil
• Salt

Mix everything together

Curry foam:

• Coconut curry sauce
• 25ml vegetable oil
• 50g garlic and ginger, chopped
• 1 medium-sized onion, sliced
• 1 tablespoon curry powder
• 1 teaspoon turmeric
• 1 tablespoon cumin powder
• 150ml coconut milk
• 1 medium fresh tomato
• 25g curry leaves
• ½ teaspoon mustard seeds
• 2 cloves, green cardamom toes
• ½ teaspoon cumin seeds
• 1 teaspoon fennel seeds
• 1 tablespoon coriander seeds
• 1 small cinnamon stick
• some fresh coriander root
• With the salt season to taste

Heat the oil in a large pan over medium heat. Crush mustard seed, cumin, coriander seeds, fennel seeds, cardamom, cinnamon stick, curry, rambha leaves, ginger, and garlic, then add onion, tomato, curry powder. Fry over medium heat for a few minutes. Add coconut milk and simmer for 5 minutes. Strain and adjust the seasoning. Puree the foam with a hand blender.

Arrange

Put pumpkin puree (hot), radishes (hot) and cauliflower couscous (cold) and curry foam on top of each other.

Today we would like to present some examples of Green Pearls® Hotels and their projects.

SCHWARZWALD PANORMA: SchwaPa BIO Kids

"The obligation to support or establish regional projects." In 2018 Stephan Bode, owner of the Hotel SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA signed the WIN Charter of the German state of Baden-Württemberg. After a long period of development work, the SchwaPa BIO Kids project launched in May 2019 with 15 school children.

The aim was to teach primary school children in the third and fourth grades about food, how it is processed and environmental protection measures that can be put in place. A total of five events were held on the topics of harvesting, animal husbandry, food production and processing, cooking, service, nutrition, etiquette, sustainability, recycling, biodiversity and climate protection. The pupils were not completely unprepared, as the school already offered a nutritional “Driver’s License”. Stephanie Schießl was responsible for overseeing the entire project and is also the CSR representative of the SCHWARZWALD-PANORAMA. She was where everything comes together. Principal Patricia Fischer from the Falkensteinschule was in charge of the project and Martina Shakya from Heilbronn University was also involved as head of the Sustainable Tourism Development Department. The patron was District Administrator Helmut Riegger.

At the end of the project, it was planned that the children would invite their parents and all those responsible to coffee and homemade cake at the table they had set themselves. The Heilbronn University of Applied Sciences also presented the participants with a certificate after a small test.

For Stephan Bode, the goal was to give the children an opportunity to put into practice what they had learned and to commit themselves to sustainable development in the future.

Unfortunately, the project was discontinued after five sessions due to the Corona restrictions. However, the feedback from parents and responsible persons involved was overwhelmingly positive.

Farmhouse Smiling Gecko: Refill Not Landfill

The Farmhouse Smiling Gecko is part of the worldwide project "Refill the World". Refill Not Landfill was founded in 2016 by Christian de Boer (Jaya House Hotels) and Dean McLachlan (JustRide Motorbike Adventures) and is a global campaign to reduce the amount of disposable plastic drinking bottles and other disposable plastic waste.

Refill Not Landfill aims to reduce plastic bottles and promotes the use of reusable drinking bottles. In doing so, millions of disposable plastic water bottles can be replaced and free water refill stations can be offered at participating companies and partners around the world.

The Farmhouse Smiling Gecko uses the refillable bottles on their tours and sells them in the small hotel shop. Refillable glass bottles are used in the guest rooms.

Keemala - Hotel Project Food Waste

The Keemala has managed, with great dedication, to create a 100% circular path for their food at the hotel. The organic garden covers almost 50% of the demand for ingredients. Different kinds of mushrooms, salads, morning glory, lemongrass, ginger, galangal, chili, basil, aloe vera and much more grows there. This significantly reduces the CO2 footprint both in the production and delivery of food and the farm-to-table concept means that guests always have the freshest possible ingredients. Some time ago, the garden was expanded to include more local green plants known for their immune-boosting properties, such as Malindjo leaves and green Chireta. The Keeemala works together with "Scholars of Sustenance" in Phuket and distributes unused food from the restaurant to disadvantaged communities and orphanages throughout Phuket. This helps to reduce food waste while also helping families and children in need. Compost not only helps enrich the soil and increase crop yields but also significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Food waste from Keemala's kitchen is composted daily in a simple process.

Gili Lankanfushi and marine life 

The Eco-Luxury Resort is committed to minimizing its ecological footprint by implementing sustainable initiatives such as reducing energy and water consumption and effective waste management. Gili Lankanfushi works closely with EarthCheck, the world's leading scientific benchmarking, certification and advisory group for sustainable travel and tourism, and received Silver certification in 2017.

Marine Biology and Nature Conservation

Two dedicated marine biologists work at the resort and support the ambitious Coral Line project. The aim is to protect and replenish the island's house reef, preserve biodiversity and to alleviate periods of coral bleaching. The project started in 2014 and today the nursery has 160 coral ropes. Each of these ropes consists of 50 small coral pieces attached to a five-meter long rope which suspended from a frame five meters below the surface of the ocean. The growth of each coral fragment is closely monitored over a period of three years before it is carefully transplanted to the house reef. All data on coral growth is recorded in a master database and published online at lines.lankanfushi.com. Gili Lankanfushi's coral nursery is very successful and the Gili Veshi team works closely with marine biologists in the Maldives to advise and help replenish the coral nurseries of other islands after coral bleaching occurs.

Seaweeds are considered the lungs of the ocean and are a vital part of the local ecosystem. They provide habitat for fish, crustaceans and young sea cucumbers, which serve as food for the local turtle population, while also helping reduce CO2 levels. Gili Lankanfushi is committed to protecting and replenishing the island's seagrass beds and regularly monitors the regrowth of seagrass in the area surrounding the resort.

Inkaterra: Andean Bear Rescue Center

The only bear species native to South America is the Andean bear (Tremarctos ornatus). It lives in an area that stretches from Venezuela to Bolivia in the western Andean region which includes coastal deserts, foothill forests, cloud forests, evergreen forests, plains and highlands. It is listed on the IUCN Red List as an endangered species, which classifies it as threatened with extinction due to poaching and habitat loss.

In 2001, the Andean Bear Conservation Centre was established at the Hotel Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo. Its mission is to study the rare bears that have been captured illegally with the aim of gaining a better understanding of their behavior in the cloud forest.

Currently, four bears are living in the sanctuary managed by the NGO Inkaterra Asociación (one female bear has even been successfully released back into the wild). The sanctuary includes an enclosure with trees, ramps and a freshwater pool, as well as a 2980m² area where two bears - a male and a female - have been released for reproduction and reintroduction into the wild. Skin and other medical checks are constantly conducted in coordination with the National Services for Nature Reserves (SERNANP).

Inkaterra Asociación, in cooperation with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and SERNANP, contributed to the publication of the National Andean Bear Conservation Strategy in Machu Picchu, a model for other wildlife management programs.

Kasbah du Toubkal and social committment 

In line with its commitment to local communities, the hotel charges a 5% fee in favor of the local village association "Association des Bassins d'Imlil" and "Education For All" www.educationforallmorocco.org. The Association des Bassins d'Imlil supports the needs of all of the surrounding valleys and provides the ambulance for the locals and guests. Other community projects that have been initiated include a waste collection system and provisions to the village of Hammam. Education For All helps to provide a college education for girls from the rural High Atlas.

Berghotel Rehlegg: Black Alpine Pig

Hannes and Franz Lichtmannegger from the Berghotel Rehlegg have initiated a very special project. Together with regional farmers, they breed the Black Alpine Pig, a species threatened with extinction. For the first time in more than 100 years, it is once again being bred in Bavaria.

The climate-positive certified restaurant obtains 90 percent of all food from the region. Their meat and fish come exclusively from organic, small-scale farming, which initially posed a problem when looking for meat from pig farming that focuses on animal welfare. The pink “fattening pigs” are not hardy enough to be kept on pastures all year round, among other things due to the fact that they have hardly any skin pigmentation and do not tolerate much sun. The solution is the hardy and outdoor-ready Black Alpine Pig, which had been extinct in Bavaria for over 100 years. He applied to the Italian protection organization "Pro Patronomio Montano", which is committed to the preservation of genetic diversity in the Alps, for some of the few surviving animals and, after extensive testing, he was able to produce six piglets. In cooperation with the partner farmers, Franz Kuchlbauer from Ramsau (district of Berchtesgadener Land) and Sebastian Kettenberger from Tittmoning (district of Traunstein) the breeding of the Black Alpine Pigs was resumed.

Currently, there are forty black Alpine pigs roaming the grounds of two partner farmers of the Berghotel Rehlegg.

The Hotel Okelmann's in Warpe in Lower Saxony makes monthly donations to organizations that are committed to the preservation and protection of nature (NaBu, Plant for the Planet).

Creativhotel Luise – knight in shining armour

During the Corona crisis, the Creativhotel was deeply committed to supporting the local community. Right at the beginning of the crisis, a neighborhood aid scheme was set up with its main purpose being to protect the risk groups and help those who were alone. Neighbors were able to contact the hotel at any time and employees went shopping for them and ran errands or similar.

Another project was the Erlanger Carepaket - an aid package from the city of Erlangen for its residents.

This package contained numerous products from Erlangen retailers and the surrounding region and could be sent to people who one would like to thank or send well wishes to. Packages could not only be sent to specific people, but senders could also choose a "for strangers" option. The hotel chose fitting locations and people who deserved a special thank you during the Corona period, some of these included the local hospital and laboratory staff, nursing staff in the senior care home, postmen and many more. A total of 423 packages were purchased within 2 weeks. "We were very happy about the enthusiastic response to this project, which enabled us to support not only many retailers, but also many 'crisis helpers' a little bit," the hotel said.

In joint cooperation with the city of Erlangen, the Creativhotel also took in Corona patients who only had mild cases, but no suitable accommodation (for example a refugee home, hostel, etc.) to quarantine themselves in. Therefore, some families and individuals spent their quarantine period in a secured area of the Creativhotel.

Bio Children's and Family Hotel Gut Nisdorf

Sabine Stange and Jürg Gloor from the Bio Children's and Family Hotel Gut Nisdorf are part of the Common Good Economy movement, which was founded in 2010 by Austrian journalist Christian Felber and now has members all over the world. Its aim is to create an alternative to the capitalist market economy: Money and markets should serve the people and not vice versa. Instead of just economic growth, the aim is to constantly increase the common good. The well-being of the people is beginning to move more into the center of economic activity.

For the owner couple Jürg Gloor and Sabine Stange, the main focus is on working sustainably and for the benefit of all.

Children and Nutrition: The Bio Breadbox Initiative

In numerous cities and regions in Germany, local organic breadbox initiatives are working as a network to ensure children have access to healthy, nutritional food. Gut Nisdorf has also been involved for three years now, packing a reusable breakfast basket with ingredients from organic farming for first graders from the area to help them the best start to their school day. The aim of this initiative is to convey to children how important and valuable a healthy breakfast is as well as where it comes from.

Zeavola's contribution to mitigating the effects of COVID -19 for employees

The COVID-19 pandemic has hit the hospitality industry in Thailand, where tourism is an important economic factor, particularly hard.

For the eco-boutique hotel on Phi Phi Island, sustainability also means protecting the workforce and the local community. The management of the resort decided to close the hotel on March 26, 2020, to allow employees to travel home before a lockdown. Due to Florian Hallerman's quick action, it was possible to send all employees home except for the emergency team before Thailand stopped all travel. This was good for both the employees and the hotel.

As a result, expenses for meals, electricity, water, sewage and even TV channels and WIFI were reduced significantly.

With the help of the Thai government, hotels were able to send their employees on vacation and pay them up to 62% of their regular salary with additional loans bridged the time until the first social security payment. All employees were therefore still able to provide for their families. In a joint staff vote, it was decided to dissolve the existing pension fund and pay it out to the employees so that another 3 months of payments could be secured. The small team that had stayed in the hotel took care of the hotel, the equipment and the jungle garden. Unfortunately, even the Zeavola could not avoid dismissals, 21 employees were dismissed in accordance with the applicable labor laws. Some of them took early retirement and received the full compensation package according to their years of service. Through the Thai social security system, many of them received compensation for 6 months, which gave them the opportunity to find alternative work during the upcoming travel season. The Sea Gypsy community was also affected by the lockdown. As the school was closed, Zeavola stopped the weekly meal for school children and teachers. However, the community was still supported by monthly rice contributions.

Tongsai Bay focuses on local engagement

Tongsai Bay on Koh Samui has followed a sustainable philosophy ever since it first opened its doors in 1987 and is one of the pioneers of sustainability in Thailand. Long before people around the world began to think about the impact of tourism on the environment and local communities, Tongsai Bay's founder, Khun Akorn Hoontrakul, had realized his vision of a sustainable hotel. Many employees have been with the resort for over 30 years and see themselves as a family. 95% of the team are from Thailand and 25 of the 200 employees are from the island of Koh Samui. It is important to the hotel to regularly provide training opportunities to their employees and foster an awareness of the environment through these training, only then can change be achieved. In order to support their employees during the closure of the hotel in the lockdown, free meals were offered and salaries were partly paid with the help of the Thai social security system. The employees are now receiving further training with a special focus on the new situation through Corona. The Eco Hotel also continued to support social projects such as the animal shelter, schools, temple projects and "Sisters of Samui", a project that feeds more than 1000 homeless people every day.

Gili Lankanfushi : GILIS SEAS – social & environmental awareness and sustainability

The 6-star hotel in the Maldives follows strict rules both in terms of the environment and social responsibility with its GILIS SEAS Program - Social & Environmental Awareness and Sustainability. Almost all employees are locals who receive intensive training and support. Whenever possible, the resort tries to purchase local and fair-trade products to keep transport distances as short as possible and to support regional producers. The suppliers are also selected according to criteria such as fair payment, good working conditions, and local employees. The hotel regularly provides a free ferry to Male and Himmafushi for the staff so that they can see their families, visit friends, or go shopping. The residents of Himmafushi can also use it and the hotel also supports the school there and pays the salary of a full-time English teacher there.

Inkaterra: Pioneer in sustainability in Peru

Since 1978, Inkaterra performs scientific research and invests in the development and education of local communities. The small hotel chain thus takes a pioneering position in terms of sustainability. More than 4,000 locals have already been trained since the foundation. Inkaterra offers career opportunities on hospitality, field guidance, and agroforestry projects on cacao and Brazil nut.  Regular workshops and conferences are organized for local communities to raise awareness of environmental protection.

New health & safety protocol 

Whilst Gili Lankanfushi is a spacious, low-density resort in an isolated location, where guests can distance from one another at ease, they have developed extensive Covid-19 health and safety guidelines to ensure the safety of guests and hosts. Following a short and private 20-minute speedboat ride from Male, guests’ temperatures will be taken on arrival in the resort, and a health declaration will be required. The resort’s dining destinations and Meera Spa are naturally built to allow for social distancing, and there will be the availability of hand sanitizer and face masks in public areas. Guest rooms will be cleaned using new high-tech disinfecting equipment and the housekeeping hosts will be provided with protective equipment to ensure the safety of themselves and guests. The hotel has its own organic farm where many foods for daily use are grown. The "Earth to Table" event is a very special experience and allows guests to participate in the harvest themselves using traditional tools and oxen. Afterwards, the harvested products are prepared by the chefs. The menu consists mainly of plant-based dishes.

Paradiso Pure Living, Italy

The hotel restaurant has a purely vegetarian menu and also offers many vegan dishes. Regional and organic products are transformed into high-quality meals and the holistic concept of the hotel incorporates vegetarian food as a sensory experience.

Keemala, Thailand

In the gardens surrounding the resort, almost all the necessary food is grown. Herbs, fruit and vegetables are used almost exclusively from their own cultivation. In addition, they grow their own mushrooms and some plants are grown by hydroponics, i.e. without soil using only with nutrient-rich water. Those who have not yet satisfied their hunger during a walk through the fruit garden can enjoy many vegan and vegetarian dishes in the restaurant.

The Tongsai Bay, Thailand

Vegan and vegetarian options are available in the hotel's various restaurants and bars. Whether it's a snack, lunch or an extensive dinner, vegan and vegetarian guests are welcome at The Tongsai Bay. The eco-resort on Koh Samui has its own garden, where, among other things, jackfruit is grown. The Jackfruit is used here among meals for the Jackfruit Burger.

The Eco-Luxury Resort is only 20 minutes by speedboat from Velana International Airport in Malé - the capital of the Republic of Maldives. The resort has 45 spacious overwater villas made of wood and glass. Originally opened in 2012, Gili Lankanfushi was previously voted ‘Best Hotel in the World’ by TripAdvisor for its uniquely laidback air and impeccable service ethic. Located in the languid waters of the North Malé Atoll, just a 20-minute speedboat ride from Malé, it is the ultimate place to get away from the world. The 45 refurbished villas will offer open-air living spaces, roof terraces and private decks with direct access to the lagoon below, and there will be the addition of new private pools to the enhanced Residence and Villa suites for extra seclusion. New Interior Design 

The warm, neutral color palette is inspired by the island’s natural surroundings for a calming effect, whilst locally sourced turquoise fabrics will add flashes of colour to the new design. Sustainability is at the heart of the island’s vision, and every piece of furniture in the new villas and living areas will be custom made by skilled craftsmen using upcycled materials. The bed frames will be made from recycled teakwood and lampshades handwoven with recycled wire mesh twist to feature fish and sea turtles from the surrounding sea. The coffee tables have been engraved with stars to reflect the clear night sky and hanging lamps crafted from bamboo prawn catcher baskets. Cycling in the Mountains or along the Coast

In recent years, rainfall, storms, floods, and coastal erosion have increased in intensity and frequency due to climate change. While not all islands are affected to the same extent by the shifting weather patterns, most are aware of significant changes – including the Green Pearls^® Island Partners. Instead of sitting idly by and waiting for the land to literally be washed away from under their feet, the Green Pearls^® Island Partners are actively working to protect their homelands and their fragile ecosystems from the effects of climate change.

Climate Neutral in the North Sea

The North Sea island of Juist has set itself an ambitious yet necessary goal: to be completely climate-neutral by 2030. Even today, the consequences of climate change are already being felt on Juist. The increasing number of dikes intended to protect the land from storm surges is a tangible measure, and the island is also actively avoiding greenhouse gases by switching to car-free transport. For some time now, the city has been offering projects and activities that bring the concept of climate protection closer to visitors, both young and old, such as the "Juistus Climate Saver" program and the "University for Children".

Colorful Coral Gardens for the Maldives

Climate change has also left its mark on the Indian Ocean. According to marine biologist Smrutica Jithendranath, responsible for the underwater world around the Reethi Faru eco-resort, rising sea levels have so far had little impact on the Maldives. However, the consequences of climate change can be clearly seen in the corals. In particular, rising water temperatures and increasingly fierce storms are causing severe damage to these tiny, sensitive animals, leading to coral bleaching and even coral death.

Based on these observations, the Reethi Faru Resort has launched a coral conservation project on Filaidhoo. In specially created underwater gardens, the resort propagates corals and plants them back into the house reef after about a year. The underwater gardens and house reefs also provide protection for the beaches and prevent them from being washed away. Within another of the many atolls of the Maldives, the North Malé Atoll, guests from the eco-resort Gili Lankanfushi can plant young corals under water in the gardens themselves and actively participate in the resort's Coral Lines Project. After the guest’s departure, they also have the opportunity to follow the development of their corals on the resort's blog.

Koh Samui Against Climate Change

The sustainable resort The Tongsai Bay on Koh Samui focuses on strategies to avoid greenhouse gases including non-motorized water sports, bicycle rental for island tours, carpooling, and avoiding cars on the hotel grounds. The resort has also supported the Green Island Foundation since its inception ten years ago. The organization's main objectives are to protect the island's climate and valuable ecosystems. For example, the Green Island Foundation has already organized car-free weeks on Koh Samui with the help of partners, such as The Tongsai Bay, to raise awareness of the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

On February 1st, 2019, the first Zero Plastic Run organized by ICS Maldives took place. The main aims of the run are to bring more attention to the negative environmental impacts caused by plastic products, and to advocate for banning or minimizing the use of everyday plastics which harm the environment. The Gili Lankanfushi team also was among the the participants of the run.

The event was a 5km run/walk where more than 1000 participants took part. The "Gili Lankanfushi family" ran along with several other companies, NGOs, politicians, students, artists, etc., who pursued the same goal. The participants collected plastic garbage along the way, which was then taken to collecting points at the event venue. According to the organizer, the runners gathered nearly 0.74 tons of plastic at the end of the event.

That way, Gili Lankanfushi pledged its support against the use of single-use-plastics beyond the resort during this event. The Zero Plastic Run will continue annually until the single-use plastics in our everyday lives is zero, and until Maldives becomes a zero single-use plastic nation.

At 11pm on 2nd January a fire broke out at Gili Lankanfushi. Seven over-water villas plus one restaurant were destroyed in the fire, however thankfully no-one was injured. The cause of the fire is still unknown, but Gili Lankanfushi is working closely with the Maldives National Defence Force and a full investigation is now underway.

Due to the bravery of the entire Gili team for prioritising the wellbeing of the guests and calmly escorting them to safety as soon as the alarm was raised, no one was injured, a deep gratitude also goes to the firefighters from the Maldives National Defence Force who were able to contain the fire.

Maldives’ Minister of Tourism, Mr Ali Waheed, visited the island the night of the fire and has been supporting the team to ensure all guests are being taken care of with alternative accommodation, flights home and any necessary travel documents.

The full extent of damage has still to be assigned, hoewever the resort will be closed for the foreseeable future. In the meantime, the team is in close touch with future guests and travel partners to assist with rearranging or refunding their holidays whilst Gili repairs the damage to re-open the resort.

Fighting over-tourism

An important factor is to recognize over-tourism and develop strategies to handle mass tourism. Some destinations already reacted with upper limits or closings, thus, e.g., the famous Maya Bay in Thailand that should remain closed for the time being only four months to recover from the tourist impacts. In the meantime, some animals have returned, a positive development. The Croatian city Dubrovnik wants to permit the tourist arrivals in 2019 and accept less cruise ships in the harbor. The motivation for action is especially up here; finally the UNESCO threatens to take away the World Cultural Heritage title from Dubrovnik. Thailand Tourism Authority continues to promote community-based tourism which should lead the travelers away from the hot spots to more unknown sites and at the same time grant the people on site a respectable livelihood. However, even if some destinations set good examples, in many places strategies how to deal with the worldwide rising tourist figures are still missing. Nevertheless, travelers can change their behavior by avoiding overcrowded spots in the high season.

Towards a plastic-free future

Almost daily we are confronted with news of the huge plastic pollution worldwide. The gigantic amounts of plastic garbage end up in nature, ashore and in the water. To fight the problem, two strategies must be pursued at the same time: Not only the use but also consumption of plastic products must be reduced drastically, and plastic has to be correctly disposed of or recycled. In Australia 1.5 milliard bags could be saved within three months after the two biggest supermarket chains have banned plastic bags. Though, in Germany the number of the used plastic bags has decreased, for food (in particular fruit and vegetables), there is an increase in the amount of plastic packaging. Here, industry and politics are called upon – till then it is up to the consumer to decide for products free of packaging whenever possible.

Strategies to handle plastic

Up to now some hotel chains not known for their sustainable philosophy could get a lot of attention for their announcements to reduce plastic. For example Iberostar wanting to substitute disposable plastics within 36 Spanish hotels with biodegradable materials and Marriott wants to ban plastic straws. The tour operator Thomas Cook plans to save 70 million disposable plastic parts until November 2019 and Wikinger Reisen offers the first plastic free trip in 2019. Statements with hopefully signal effect.

Concrete implementation

Every year, Green Pearls® partners prove anew how these measurements can be realized: The Zeavola Resort in Thailand, for example, bottles its own drinking water in glass bottles for the guests since August, 2018 and saves up to 95,000 plastic bottles per year. There are similar systems with the Maldivian Resorts Reethi Beach and Gili Lankanfushi with its "No Plastic Policy", as well as at the hotels CGH Earth in India. The Tongsai Bay on Koh Samui all along uses drinking straws from lemon grass - only one of the many small measures of a sustainable lodging. To use less packaging, the SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA offers a butter donator on its breakfast buffet making it easy to portion and avoiding single-packed butter.

Clean-up of the ocean

Everybody has heard of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch between Hawaii and California. There were positive news this year from the first project fighting the garbage patch: The Ocean Clean Up project could take the "ocean cleaner" to its planned location in the Pacific in September where it had begun to collect plastic from the sea. Updates are published directly at The Ocean Clean Up.

An example shows that the production of 1 kg tofu requires 925 liters of water, whereas producing 1 kg of beef expends 15,415 liters. Furthermore, woodlands are regularly deforested to create new pasturages, especially in the climate-relevant rainforest. Boycott exploitation

The Keemala pursues a strict policy against exploitation of animals. The resort communicates to its guests clearly to avoid holiday activities where animals are abused for the entertainment of the tourists. That's why the resort sells no tickets for attractions as for example elephant riding, tiger or dolphin shows. Instead, they propose ethical animal or cultural experiences, or cultural Phuket. Besides, Keemala is home to a water buffalo, a peacock, goats, geese and chickens, which were saved or donated and now life in peace.

At home in the tree tops

The Tongsai Bay provides more than 28 hectares of untouched nature, which is home to more than 60 bird species. The hotel has a strict policy regarding animals’ welfare: If an employee damages or kills an animal that lives in the hotel garden, this person is dismissed. Besides, trees may be felled only with permission of the owner. Also at the Zeavola Resort on Koh Phi Phi 18 different bird species can be found as for example the nectar bird or the mistletoe eater. In the resort fruit-trees were planted especially for the birds as food source and during hatching time there are designated rest areas for the animals. The pinnate animals can also be observed along a lot of trails in their natural living space at the Peruvian Hotel Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba to which the environmental organization Inkaterra Asociación belongs.

Back to colored seas

It is frequently reported about the bleaching of the once colorful Great Barrier Reefs. Not only the Australian coast is threatened by the coral death: Worldwide the sensitive sea inhabitants suffer from the impact of human beings polluting the environment. More storms as well as rising water temperatures caused by climate change, industrial soiling as well as chemical materials from cosmetics and sunscreen in the sea water are only some of the factors which damage the corals in the long term.

At the Gili Lankanfushi on the Maldives corals are afforested within the scope of the Coral Lines Project and after adequate time transplanted in the reefs. At the Reethi Faru Resort several "coral gardens" were installed in which young or injured corals are put up in metal boxes around the atoll and are transplanted later to maintain the ecosystem of the Maldives. Besides, the Tongsai Bay on Koh Samui offers its guests sunscreen friendly to corals.

Threatened by humans

In 2018 a sanctuary for bears from captivity was opened at Arosa, Switzerland. The first inhabitant is dancing bear Napa that now lives on 2.8 hectares and is the first time outside a cage. Also in Peru the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo hotel supports a protective area for the meanwhile rare Andes bear. Through the influence of the humans the number of the local bears has drastically decreased, now they can find a safe habitat in the protective area. Visitors can observe the Andes bears in their national environment and support the preservation of this natural living space with their donation.

Big and small fish

Based on the massive decreased shark population the Reethi Beach Resort on the Maldives has incorporated the Baa Atoll Project, which meanwhile is recognized as NGO called BAARU (Baa Atoll Resorts United). Beside the protection of the sharks there are also rules for fishing as well as boat traffic around the islands. The regulations contain a restriction of the area where sharks may be fished, a national ban of shark products, rules for fishing as well as the trade of sea animals. Besides, an "underwater ranger" looking after the reefs and the underwater world was trained. The recognition of Baa Atoll as UNESCO biospheres reserve in 2011 was also a merit of the organization and the project.

During the ten-day parades in honor of the nine gods, the entire Thai Island Phuket turns vegan! With impressive – and likewise gruesome – tricks of self-mortification by rods and fire, men and women of the Chinese community ask their gods for health and happiness. In addition to many traditional dishes, the chefs of the four restaurants enjoy pampering their guests with vegan food. Especially lovers of Asian cuisine will be happy: among other things, spring rolls, curry, Nasi Goreng, or pumpkin-avocado-salad are available without animal products. The ingredients for the delicious dishes at Puri Dajuma are obtained from local farmers and fishermen.

At Gili Lankanfushi, chef Harinath Govindaraj loves enchanting his guests with vegan and specifically raw food, referring to a whole movement of people who eat without cooking – the ingredients remain raw. In case this is hard to imagine, try Govindaraj’s own creation "chocolate-passion fruit-marzipan-cake." He draws his inspiration for new compositions from the hotels’ organic garden in the heart of the Maldivian island Lankanfushi where herbs, salads, and Aloe Vera grow.

Everybody is quite capable of contributing to the protection of the environment. If you are wondering how you can get started (if you haven’t already), is by taking some small and simple steps. And you don’t have to wait until you are at home to get started; you can do it from anywhere, even while on holiday, with some reliable sustainable travel tips.

Each of us can contribute to environmental protection with small, and often easy steps, also during your holiday. Whether it is plastic free, a vegan restaurant, or the right sun protection – we show you some practical tips for traveling more consciously and more sustainably without any great effort – best of all, the tips are also suitable for daily use.

General tips not only for your vacation

Often, your journey can be planned more ecologically: You could travel by train instead of using your own car. Arriving at your vacation destination, you may take the public transportation or rent bikes. In many mountain regions coaches will take you to central starting points for hiking routes, so you do not need your own car. Another general idea is using digital tickets instead of printing it out. Your shoes and laundry can be packed in cloth bags instead of plastic bags. When buying souvenirs, consider whether they are really useful and under which conditions they were produced. Hence, it is easy doing good!

Choose toiletries consciously

I pack my bag and take with me … your toiletry kit should contain plastic-free cotton buds and cosmetics in biodegradable packaging free from micro plastics. Most Green Pearls® hotels provide sustainable care products which are either unpacked or refillable, so you must not bring anything. If you still prefer using your own products, think about soap bars instead of plastic bottles, as for example organic shampoo bars. Or why not simply manufacture your care products yourself in the hotel? Become active

Have you already heard of the Swedish trend Plogging? Plogging describes joggers collecting trash on their run which you can easily adopt on your hiking tour, on the beach, and on lakes – easily doing good by the way. If you want to become active in a group, find out if actions take place in your holiday region: The Thai organization "Trash Hero" collects garbage from beaches and nature regularly. Some hotels also organize sustainable projects themselves: on the Maldives you can help to afforest coral reefs at the Gili Lankanfushi, for example. Alternatively, you can gather trash on the beach and from the corals in the Resorts Reethi Beach and Reethi Faru on Reethi Day together with hotel staff.

Water consumption: what you can do...

In many countries water is natural, in others it is only limited available. Therefore, we should handle the resource responsibly – also on vacation. You can shorten your shower time, for example, turn off the water while brushing your teeth or soaping yourself, or use the towels and duvet covers several times. Most hotels offer to change towels only when required.

Many Green Pearls® hotels have already intensely dealt with the subject water consumption: Thus, the Creativhotel Luise in Erlangen uses the shower technology of the NASA which saves 90 percent of water and 80 percent of energy, and besides, the toilets are flushed with rainwater. The Italian Relais del Maro relies on water-saving taps and uses water for the garden and the pool from a nearby Artesian well. The Zeavola Resort on Koh Phi Phi depends on self-sufficient water supply and therefore engages in a sustainable water management. Hence, there are filter systems, which reduce the amount of water while showering, rainwater is collected, and even the condensation of the air-conditionings is used in the hotel’s water cycle. Additionally, recently various processing and bottling plants provide guests with drinking water solely “made” from the Resort itself.

Conventional sunscreen has considerable consequences for the marine ecosystem, because the chemical substances facilitate the dying of the corals. In general, sunscreen should not be applied to your skin immediately before bathing, but give it some time until your skin fully absorbed it so the sunscreen will not solve in the water. However, green alternatives like organic sunscreen are best. Due to the natural ingredients and mineral UV filter, they neither harm the environment nor us. That is why the Tongsai Bay offers "coral-friendly" sunscreen. You also find eco-friendly sun protection at the Gili Lankanfushi. The hotel additionally offers sunglasses with wooden frames to avoid plastic. 

Definitely possible: Eco-friendly culinary well-being 

Good food belongs to every good vacation! You can enjoy your meals environmentally friendly without much effort: search for green restaurants nearby, for example those focusing on vegan, organic, or zero waste meals. Instead of taking away your food, eat inside, or at least bring your own reusable containers (cups, boxes, bottles). It is easy to avoid single-use plastic bottles since there is clean tap water in many holiday regions. And sometimes, it even gets better: At the Viennese hotel Das Capri as well as in the Arosea Life Balance Hotel in South Tyrol you get fresh spring water from the tap.

Distinguishing “good volunteering” from “bad volunteering”

So-called orphanage tourism is an illustrative example of the dark side of volunteering: in his book “Das Gegenteil von gut … ist gut gemeint“ the sociologist Daniel Rössler reports on orphanages in Ghana, where nine out of ten children have a family. In order to meet the increasing demand of volunteers from the global West, families were torn apart and children separated from their parents. This is not an isolated case: according to a study by Unicef, 85 percent of all “orphans” in Cambodian orphanages still have at least one living parent – a business practice that developed from an unreflecting volunteer tourism, offered in glossy brochures in combination with a safari or a beach vacation. It is just one example, why it is so important to examine the purpose and background of supposed aid projects very carefully.

Helping in the long term – with suitable skills

The initial question ought to be: which skills are useful on site? Of course, motivation is the basis for volunteering. However, without relevant skills, volunteering can cause negative effects. For example, nobody should teach children or help out with childcare without having suitable experience, and the same applies to the medical field. The reality is often quite different. Dubious travel agents communicate that it is sufficient to be motivated and show personal initiative. And especially with young people, a volunteer trip is advertised as a great opportunity to gain experience before entering professional life, to acquire new skills and to explore cultures and countries. This may also be true, but only as a positive side effect. Volunteering is not about self-discovery; it is about supporting where help is needed. A good volunteering organization can be identified by the fact that it carefully selects participants according to this rule preparing them by providing information and raising awareness.

What is the added value of my work?

Another characteristic of an aid organization that acts responsibly is that it organizes projects that have a lasting effect and help people to help themselves. This means that it is oriented towards the actual needs of the local people and involves them into its processes. It also means that volunteers should not take on jobs that local people could do themselves. In this case, too, it is important to take a closer look: Does a volunteer cause a local to be unemployed or does he have important skills that are wanted on site and that offer added value? Of course, there are also situations when every helping hand is needed, for example in the wake of a natural disaster. However, this also calls for a consideration of the question what is more helpful: being present at the destination and at the same time causing further costs, or maybe making a donation that enables experts to be sent there.

Volunteers should question their own motivation and possibilities

Volunteering means work and not everyone can provide the needed time and energy. So it is particularly important for volunteers to reflect upon their own situation and motivation. “We recommend travelers and those interested in volunteering to prepare well for volunteer assignments, to question their own motivation and to stay at the destination as long as possible”, says Christine Plüss, executive director of “Arbeitskreis Tourismus und Entwicklung“ (working group on tourism and development) and co-editor of the study “Vom Freiwilligendienst zum Voluntourismus” (“From Voluntary Service to Voluntourism”). “If there is not enough time for a well-prepared, long-term voluntary service, an encounter-oriented trip providing a look behind the scenes of tourism might be a better choice.”

Learning, helping and developing awareness

There are numerous opportunities for traveling sustainably and experience-oriented: the Peruvian NGO Inkaterra Asociación (ITA) provides extensive information on flora and fauna during rainforest tours and offers activities allowing visitors to support important nature conservation measures. In the Maldives, guests of Gili Lankanfushi can participate in the Coral Lines Project, assisting in the regeneration of coral reefs by attaching corals to ropes in collaboration with marine biologists. And Reethi Faru Resort is committed to raising awareness for the protection of flora and fauna, regularly organizing joint beach cleanups on “Reethi Day”. In Thailand, there are more and more community based tourism initiatives, involving travelers into the daily live of villagers and allowing them to learn a lot about cultural and natural activities such as fishing or vegetable cultivation. These projects enable locals to earn a living from tourism and at the same time to preserve their traditions and culture. In addition, personal relationships build bridges between tourists and locals, and tourists gain valuable, authentic experiences and gain a deeper understanding of the country and its people.

Returning from such a trip and acting as an ambassador for sustainable projects contributes to raising awareness and making it easier to distinguish good aid projects from allegedly good ones. So, there are many great opportunities for traveling consciously and making a difference. Stylish bags against climate change

Creativhotel Luise is the first climate-positive hotel in Germany. Its concept includes numerous measures for climate protection, such as preserving half of its premises of over 3,000 m2 as a green area, which is also home to a biotope garden, and generating its own power by means of a photovoltaic system. Inspired by the picture of an iceberg on an old advertising tarp that had been saved from being discarded, Creativhotel Luise initiated a creative up cycling project: a bag collection created in cooperation with sine design. Each bag is made from a piece of the tarp and from scraps of artificial leather taken from the upholstering industry. On April 22nd, the cooperation partners donated the proceeds from the sale to the Earth Day Canopy Project, supporting their goal of planting 7,8 billion new trees in order to stave off the effects of climate change. For, the initiators of the bag project still want to see icebergs in the future, as they state on their website.

In line with the theme of Earth Day

Gili Lankanfushi also utilized bags as a way of responding to this year’s motto of Earth Day: end plastic pollution. The resort on the Maldives has been committed to the prevention and recycling of plastic waste for years, for example by means of a strict “no plastic policy”, staff trainings, beach cleanups and cooperations with environmental initiatives such as Parley for the Oceans. Yet the problem is more present than ever. To raise awareness for this issue, the Gili Lankanfushi team distributed cloth bags on Earth Day, thus presenting a simple first step towards zero waste.

Children are the future

The hotel group CGH Earth begins its environmental education projects at an early stage. On Earth Day, Spice Village invited children from a nearby school and gave them a tour of the resort’s premises and its sustainable and eco-friendly measures. These include extensive water saving measures and the resort is the first one in India using solar energy only. Moreover, Spice Village produces only a very small amount of plastic waste, for instance by using glass bottles, ceramic containers and paper straws. The children learned a lot about recycling and avoiding waste: at Spice Village, the furniture is made of recycled pinewood from former packing cases and handmade paper is produced from old newspapers and magazines. For the children this excursion was not only a welcome change from school routine, it certainly gave a boost to their environmental awareness, too, and got them enthusiastic about these creative ideas.

Where trees have nothing to fear

Tongsai Bay on Koh Samui in Thailand is situated amidst a green area covering a total of 25 acres. For the Hoontrakul family, a hotel routine in harmony with nature has top priority. Particular care was taken not to harm the existing ecosystem from the construction phase on, and until today not a single tree has been cut down to build the resort. On the contrary: on Earth day, staff and guests planted even more trees. The coconut saplings will increase the absorption of carbon dioxide on the premises and thus counteract climate change. By the way, guests were invited to enjoy an organic cocktail dedicated to the special day – served, as always at Tongsai Bay, with a plastic free drinking straw made from lemon grass.

Exploring nature while protecting it

The Inkaterra hotels in Peru offer a wide range of guided tours through nature. On Earth Day, Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba organized an additional hiking tour for staff and guests to clean the surrounding area from waste. The participants of similar Inkaterra initiatives cleaned the river bordering the premises of Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica as well as the cloud forest area belonging to the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel – perfect for exploring the fascinating nature and at the same time contributing to its preservation. This combination characterizes every vacation at the Inkaterra hotels, as their tourist activities also finance Inkaterra Asociación, which is committed to the research and preservation of the local flora and fauna. In addition to numerous other projects and workshops on Earth Day, guests of Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel had the opportunity to plant tree saplings, thus participating in the reforestation of the cloud forest area.

Disposable items and plastic packaging, micro plastics in cosmetic products – currently there is much debate about the plastic waste flooding our oceans. In February 2018, Sweden responded to this kind of pollution by banning the use of micro plastics in cosmetics. This is an important step, but the particles they contain add up to only 2 % of the micro plastics that find their way into the sea. A much higher amount is produced through the abrasion of car tires or synthetic clothes, according to a study by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. It demonstrates that there is still a long way to go and it is vital to change our consumer behavior and rethink product and infrastructure design. However, avoiding and recycling plastic is still important – at home and while traveling. These Green Pearls® partner hotels set an example.

What is so dangerous about plastic in the ocean?

If nothing changes, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050 – this warning is commonly known by now and yet not less worrying. Depending on the material, it can take between 300 and 1000 years for plastic materials to fully decompose. During this process it disintegrates into smaller and smaller pieces, all the way down to micro plastics. These particles are not only dangerous for human health if they are swallowed during diving, surfing or bathing in the sea, but particularly if they are ingested by fish and end up in our food. Among others, plastic exposure may cause reproductive problems, hormonal changes or damage of the nervous system. Moreover, plastic in the ocean directly endangers marine life, for example it causes sea creatures to starve, as their stomachs are full of plastic, or they get entangled in bigger plastic structures. These risks to human and animal health are an essential part of the sustainability training of the staff at Gili Lankanfushi on the Maldives: its focus is on avoiding and discarding plastic waste responsibly.

Avoiding plastic packaging

In hotel business, packaging is important to consider in this context. The small amount of plastic waste that is produced by the CGH Earth hotels in India is sent to local recycling plants. The quantities are small because the hotels focus on avoiding plastic packages as far as possible. They use glass bottles instead of plastic bottles for the drinking water in the guest rooms, ceramic containers for cosmetic products in the bathrooms and paper straws in the restaurant. Vegetables are delivered in crates that are returned to the vendor and for their suppliers, the CGH Earth hotels organize awareness classes on the subject.

Wrapped naturally

Hofgut Hafnerleiten near Passau in Germany has a similar approach. Some of their suppliers have already switched to reusable boxes and in the cozy themed houses, situated in the middle of nature between ponds and trees, guests are provided with food that is wrapped in an environmentally-friendly way: bread is packed in fabric bags, jam in glass jars, sausages and cheese in paper. There aren’t any yoghurt cups, too, since Hofgut Hafnerleiten produces its own yoghurt and fills it into jars.

Raising awareness and sharing knowledge

Plastic waste and its proper disposal are also a major challenge for the island Koh Samui in Thailand. That is why Tongsai Bay, just like Gili Lankanfushi, focuses on the education of their staff, increasing awareness and respect for nature. By implementingTongsai Bay’s practices and guidelines at their homes, the employees set an example, share their knowledge with the rest of the population and gradually bring change to the island. Tongsai Bay’s measures of avoiding plastic are very creative as well. The toothbrushes are biodegradable and the drinking straws are made of lemon grass – by the way, Tongsai Bay provides a tutorial on its Facebook page, which is another way of encouraging people to join in their commitment.

Joint efforts for the protection of the ocean

On the Maldives, a responsible waste management cannot be taken for granted; most of the garbage ends up on the so-called garbage island or is simply thrown into the sea. That is why Gili Lankanfushi has a strict “no plastic policy”. Nevertheless, the hotel has to face great amounts of plastic that are washed ashore or brought from Malé. In response to this, the resort regularly organizes staff trainings and beach cleanups that can also be joined by guests. Gili Lankanfushi cooperates with the environmental initiative Parley, which takes care of the recycling of the collected material and fights against plastic in the oceans by means of high-profile cooperations. For example, the recycled material is transformed into thread, used by Adidas for the production of high performance shoes and clothing. Supported by Parley, Gili Lankanfushi is going to bring its recycling efforts to the neighboring island Himmafushi, raise awareness and encourage the collection of plastic waste – in order to gradually reduce the amount of plastic in the oceans.

The political situation in Malé, capital city of the Maldives, has been tense since the beginning of February. Due to the social unrest and the state of emergency from February 5th to 22nd, many travelers are wondering if a trip to the Maldives is safe, given the circumstances – not realizing that the political turmoil only affects the capital Malé. In order to find out more about the situation at the island resorts and how it is perceived by hotels and travelers, Green Pearls® interviewed representatives of its partner resorts on the Maldives.

What is the situation on the resort islands like?

Enjoying the unspoilt nature on the Maldives and leaving the daily routine behind – this is what characterizes vacations at the sustainable island resorts Gili Lankanfushi, Reethi Beach and its associated resort Reethi Faru. Over the last months, the relaxed atmosphere at the resorts has not changed, as the interview partners Zayan Fayaz, communication manager at the Reethi resorts, and Tammy Gan, communication manager at Gili Lankanfushi, state unanimously. Fayaz explains why: “Since most guests pass through Malé International Airport (Velana Airport), they don’t have to face the occasional situations that happen in the busy city of Male.” This is because the airport is not located directly on the capital island Malé, but on Hulhule Island. From there, tourists are directly transferred to their resort. Even “the short-lived state of emergency did not affect tourists visiting the region”, as emphasized in an official statement from Gili Lankanfushi, “and all flights and resorts operated as planned during the 45-day period.”

How do the guests react?

“The atmosphere amongst Gili Lankanfushi’s guests remains positive and relaxed”, notes Tammy Gan. “Our staff have had a small number of queries from guests”, she observes and adds that they can assure them of their safety within the resort and the wider region. The Reethi Beach and Reethi Faru resorts, too, are “as peaceful as ever”, says Fayaz. “Occasionally we do get questions about the situation Maldives is facing with occasional unrest in the capital city – but the question tend more in the direction of ‘How come the island is so peaceful but news sources say otherwise?’ You see, something that may be a little difficult to perceive from watching or reading about Maldives from another country is that the division into more than a thousand islands really does help maintain a peaceful atmosphere in most of the islands and resorts.”

Is it still possible to go on excursions?

What’s more, 125 of the 1,196 islands of the Maldives are reserved exclusively for tourists – so on the vacation islands there is usually no contact to the locals, except for the resorts’ staff. Therefore, the Reethi resorts organize excursions to local islands, always making sure that guests have a comfortable experience. Asked if guests keep going on excursions to local islands in spite of the situation or if they are frightened to leave the resort, Fayaz says, “As long as we have been in operation I can't recall any guests who were frightened to go on trips or excursions, as our team always accompanies guests on such trips. At the moment, we haven’t taken guests to local islands, but we do go to sandbanks and lagoons for snorkeling and diving. Fear is not a word that generally exists with the Reethi Faru and Reethi Beach experiences.”

Are there also excursions to Malé?

The Gili Lankanfushi team has a similar approach. In answer to the question, if the resort still offers excursions to Malé, Tammy Gan says: “We can still arrange excursions to Malé on request, with guests accompanied by a certified tour guide from the resort, but most guests opt to relax at Gili Lankanfushi and enjoy the wealth of activities and experiences available within the resort and the surrounding seas.” However, many guests at Gili Lankanfushi still wish to get in contact with locals: “We are still arranging visits to local islands for guests, where they have the opportunity to meet local communities, learn about authentic Maldivian culture and experience the laidback island way of life.”

No reason to avoid the island nation

Thinking of locals, one should also remember that most of them are dependent on tourism. A lack of visitors would be a financial disaster for many Maldivians. Travelers looking for a sustainable holiday experience that does not only contribute to environmental protection, but also benefits the local residents – as is the case with Green Pearls’® partner hotels – should always keep this aspect in mind. Of course, seeking information on the current situation is always advisable. However, as long as it does not change fundamentally, there is no need to worry when traveling to the Maldives. “We continually monitor all political situations in the region, and maintaining our guests’ safety and peace of mind is our priority”, Gili Lankafushi states. So, if travelers are concerned, they can always contact their resort for more information.

What is the “seventh resource”? According to the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR), we should bear in mind that besides the primary natural resources water, air, coal, oil, natural gas and minerals, a seventh resource is getting more and more important: recyclables. Therefore, on March 18^ththe first Global Recycling Day took place. The objective of the BIR initiative is to make people rethink their attitude towards recyclables, stress the great importance of recycling for the future of our planet, create global connections and unite the world’s approach to recycling. All over the world, events and activities focusing on the motto “reduce, reuse, recycle” were organized. Individuals did not only have the opportunity to participate in these activities and obtain information on the project’s website, but also show their commitment by signing a petition asking the United Nations to take concrete action for a united approach towards recycling. Green Pearls® highlights a few examples to show what happened on that day and what is possible everyday in terms of recycling.

Paddle against plastic

The Gili Lankanfushi team promotes a more responsible use of plastic by means of numerous initiatives such as regular staff trainings and a strict “no plastic policy”. For the plastic pollution of the oceans presents a major threat to the sensitive ecosystem of the underwater world surrounding the resort island on the Maldives. Therefore, the marine biology team at Gili Lankanfushi organized an endurance event called “Paddle against Plastic”on Global Recycling Day: members of the Gili team covered a distance of 14 kilometers; stand up paddling and on the route collecting plastic from the ocean surface. This way they once more stood up against the overuse of plastic on the Maldives and for raising awareness of this issue.

Stylish fashion made of plastic waste

A beach and ocean cleanup took place two days earlier, on March 16th, in the province Chumphon in Thailand. It was led by Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports, Weerasak Kowsurat and supported by numerous government officials, volunteers and 75 open water divers. The initiative “Upcycling the Oceans, Thailand” operates not only on Recycling Day, but also anytime and anywhere in Thailand. It was founded in cooperation of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the non-profit organization Ecoalf Foundation and the petrochemical company PTT Global Chemical Public(PTTGC) aiming at an organized and systematic waste collection by coordinating all fishers and beach cleaning associations during the project term from 2017 to 2019. But that is not all: the collected plastic is transformed into threads and finally fabric that is used by the fashion label Ecoalf to produce stylish clothing or accessories like shoes and bags.

Creative ways of recycling in India

The CGH Earth Hotels in India demonstrate the great range of what can be recycled in hotel business and how. For example, in the biogas plant of Coconut Lagoon food waste is transformed into gas for cooking. Eco-friendly manure for the garden is produced from the remaining slurry in combination with dry leaves. The sewage of Coconut Lagoon is treated and used for the irrigation of the garden and for toilet flushing. At Spice Village, part of the furniture in the rooms is made of recycled pinewood from packing cases. There is also a handmade paper center processing old newspapers and magazines at Spice Village. According to a century-old method, using the crown of pineapples as an adhesive, the small team produces paper for letters, invitations or manuals.
