The scenario described above is not uncommon. Thanks to hotel apps and the like, guests can check in quickly and contactlessly, call up information from the digital guest information centre or book spa offers. Direct contact with the team for extra requests or service enquiries is also possible and convenient. Another advantage: thanks to digital applications, there is no need for guest folders, countless brochures, or information leaflets made of paper and plastic. Hotel apps therefore not only ensure a pleasant, relaxed stay, but also help protect the environment. So it’s no wonder that many of our Green Pearls® partners rely on apps, web applications and in-room tablets. 

One-Stop Shop - The Hotel App with Digital Guest Information Folder

Whether self-programmed or developed with existing providers: It is hard to imagine many Green Pearls® hotels without a Hotel App. For example, additional packages at Berghotel Rehlegg can be booked via the “Gastfreund” App. The current evening menu can also be called up from the room or on the go. A QR code within it also details where the food has been sourced from.

The ADLER Lodge RITTEN Web App offers enquiry options as well as the guest folder in digital form with information about the hotel, the room and the surroundings. It also links the various ADLER hotels so guests can already begin to think about their next trip. 

The HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio Allgäu has a similar system: Book activities, make extra requests, read the daily newspaper or do some research on excursions or day trips? All conveniently possible in an app. On the Baltic Sea, at the Lifestylehotel SAND on Timmendorfer Strand, outdoor saunas, bamboo bicycles from myBoo or the SAND sleeping beach chair can be booked via a smartphone app. A digital check-in/check-out service is also being introduced.

The Croatian Maslina Resort has its own app where hotel guests can not only learn interesting facts about the region and the hotel; they can also find their room key, book restaurant seats or treatments at the Pharomatiq Spa - and learn a little Croatian!

Other hotels, however, use their app purely as an information portal. The Océano Health Spa Hotel on Tenerife, for example, offers its guests everything they need to know about the hotel and the island in one place, so that they can enjoy a relaxing stay without having to lose themselves in endless research about excursion options. 

The Personal Digital Concierge - In-Room Tablets and Web App

Instead of relying on guests to download an app, the team at Naturresort Schindelbruch opted for a different solution. Tablets with the guest information folder and other functions are available in the rooms. Regardless of whether guests have your own smartphone, they can access information and services such as cancelling room cleaning. For those on the move, there is a browser-based web app that mirrors the interface of the in-room tablet.

Tablets are also part of the basic room amenities at the SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA in Bad Herrenalb, which guests can use to get an overview of the hotel and its surroundings.

Collecting Steps and Discovering Trails - Cooperation with External App Providers

It is not only in-house hotel apps that offer our partners' guests greater convenience. The ROMANTIC Boutique Hotel & SPA in Lithuania motivates its overnight guests to walk new trails with the help of an app. Via the #walk15 app of a Lithuanian start-up, the hotel invites its guests to take part in a walking challenge. To increase motivation even more, there are rewards for step goals achieved!

The Paradiso Pure.Living and LA VIMEA in South Tyrol also do not rely on a classic hotel app. Instead, the hotels cooperate with the outdoor navigation app Peak Visor. Guests can register with Peak Visor free of charge for the duration of their stay and use the app to plan their hiking routes in the Dolomites, navigate offline and identify mountain peaks. The cooperation also resulted in a compilation of the top hiking routes around the Paradiso Pure.Living Hotel. 

Not Only for the Guests - Hotel Management via Mobile App

In addition to the advantages that digital applications offer hotel guests, the benefits for the hotel's management should not be underestimated. Here, Puri Dajuma is in the process of setting new standards. They realised that currently no app available on the market could really meet the needs of medium-sized hotels. Without further ado, they developed their own management app. They have been using it for two years now and are in the process of releasing it for other hotels.  

Apps, tablets and web applications have become an indispensable part of everyday hotel life. What at first sounds like making guest services more impersonal is, at second glance, a win-win situation for guests and staff. Many small issues can be solved in the app or online, leaving more time for personalised customer care and a relaxed holiday.

Suzann Heinemann, the managing director of GreenSign, answers a few questions for us:

The innovative and modern concept of GreenSign is based on a five-level certification system, so that each hotel can start with their individual level of sustainability performance and continue to develop.

What was the idea behind founding GreenSign? What is the motivation behind the label?

20 years ago, I founded the hotel cooperation GreenLine Hotels. The name, which originally stood for a location surrounded by greenery, gradually turned into more of a mission for us at the beginning of the last decade, because sustainability became increasingly important, and we started to deal with it extensively. So, we decided to look for a sustainability certificate for our member hotels at that time.

We quickly realised that the ideal certification for hotels did not yet exist. I always say: all or nothing! It should have a solid foundation and we never wanted to be accused of greenwashing. A certification should be practice-oriented to the hotel industry and reflect the three pillars of sustainability. We saw that we needed to pick up the hotels where they were with their sustainability performance and wanted to develop this further with a suitable management system. Our unique five-level system was developed to provide transparency and so that everyone can see how far the hotelier has progressed across each area of sustainability. Sustainability is an ongoing process that never stops.

In 2015, we founded the InfraCert institute and introduced the GreenSign sustainability certificate to the hospitality industry.

What sets you apart from other certificates?

I like to claim that with GreenSign and our more than 100 criteria across eight core areas of sustainability, which was built on international frameworks, we are already looking very intensively and ambitiously into all areas of sustainable business. Our certification catalogue complies with international GSTC standards and each hotel is assessed on site. The hotels have to fulfil an extensive range of measures to be awarded a satisfactory GreenSign level. But this is also important, because the guest expects this now more than ever. Our certification includes assessing the hotel's carbon footprint and enables the hotelier to reduce their footprint with appropriate measures in the years to come.

Our five-level certification system is unique in the industry to date. After the initial certification, we do not leave the hotelier alone to try and work on bettering themselves in silence. We integrate them into our GreenCommunity and stay in constant contact so that they receive many suggestions and information for their further sustainable development.

Why are there the five different levels, and how are they assigned? Can a hotel also be upgraded or downgraded?

We see sustainability as a continuous process of development. Every hotel that is committed to sustainability has different prerequisites, and there should always be the possibility for improvements.

When the hotelier applies to us, they must first provide answers to the GreenSign certification questionnaire, which contains over 100 sustainability-related questions, some of which are mandatory. This is also a kind of guideline for the hotelier, so that they can implement measures in the future that they may have not been aware of before. Depending on the fulfilled criteria, the hotel is classified in Level 1 to 5, where we call the latter the "sustainability winner". We always provide individual support and advice to hoteliers on how to improve their level. The GreenSign is valid for 3 years, but the hotelier can apply for a re-evaluation at any time. We have never had a downgrade; the topic of sustainability is simply too important nowadays.

More than 80 percent of the hotels now have a very good level of 3 to 5 and in fact it is striking that many hotels today enter with an excellent level of 4. Many hoteliers have used the lockdown period very effectively to improve the quality and sustainability in their hotels and to raise staff awareness around the topic.

By the way, the Green Pearls Naturresort Schindelbruch, SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA, Green City Hotel Vauban in Germany, and the APIPURA Hotel Rinner in Italy are also GreenSign certified.

Mindfulness in the Ligurian Mountains

In the northwest of Italy, between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the magnificent Maritime Alps, lies Liguria. Liguria, with its pristine countryside, authentic mountain villages and unique culture, is a wonderful place to unwind. This involves issues such as food waste, overall waste reduction, plastic reduction, and using more regionally sourced products. When you take a closer look, everything actually intertwines. Choosing seasonal and regional food shortens transport distances and reduces CO2 emissions, as the distances traveled to reach the hotel are shorter, and then there is less need for refrigeration, and storage is far more environmentally friendly. At the same time, waste and plastic as packaging materials are avoided. And another important effect: the regional economy and relationships with local producers are strengthened!

More and more guests are consciously opting for sustainable accommodation. For them, a sustainable lifestyle is a combination of pleasure and healthy living. Seasonal, organic, and regional are in vogue, and they stand for the conscious use of our valuable resources.

Bruderhahn eggs for breakfast at the SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA

The SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA sources their eggs and other foodstuffs such as meat, lentils, and potatoes from the Biohof Reiser in Straubenhardt, which rears Bruderhahn. But what exactly does this mean?

Due to selective breeding, 2 main breeds of chicken have been developed over the last 80 years from the original domestic chicken. Chickens are bred either on laying performance or on meat production performance. For fattening, male or female animals are reared; the only important thing is to gain weight as quickly as possible.

The male animals in the laying breeds are “useless” as they can neither lay eggs nor quickly gain weight and are therefore worthless and normally killed immediately after hatching.

Biolandhof Reiser tries to break new ground with the breed "Sandy". The female animals lay fewer eggs, but the male animals gain weight a little faster - this is the Bruderhahn, or brother rooster. This compromise is only profitable if a higher price can be achieved for both the eggs and the slaughtered chicken.

Therefore, this concerns us as consumers! It is up to us how animals are treated. It is not always about cheaper, but about animal welfare and quality!

The SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA thus consciously decides against the ethically reprehensible killing of chicks and supports the regional organic farm Biohof Reiser in Straubenhardt.

Sustainable seafood at Keemala, Thailand

The Keemala in Kamala in Phuket represents a natural and sustainable philosophy based on the history of four Phuket tribes, the 'Pa-ta-pea' (earth), the 'Khon-Jorn' (wanderer), the 'We-ha' (sky), and the 'Rung-Nok' (nest) people.

The hotel's organic garden covers almost 50% of the demand of the ingredients used in the kitchen.

In an effort to continually improve Keemala's sustainable commitment, Keemala's chef visits local fish markets and fish communities to find suppliers for fish caught within a 10-20 kilometer radius of the Phuket coast. Snappers, pomfrets and monk fish on the menu are 100% local and seasonal.

Biohotel Sturm- everything organic and local

Biohotel Sturm has relied on regional producers from day one. The hotel is a member of BIO HOTELS and Slow Food Germany and all the food used is 100% organic and comes from local farms. Whenever possible, the products used and processed in the organic kitchen are sourced regionally. The farmers and producers are subject to the strict guidelines of organic farming.

La Subida supports regional farms

The owner family of La Subida Relais in Friuli, on the border with Slovenia, uses only regional, local, and seasonal organic ingredients - both in the Osteria and the Trattoria. The cooperation with local producers supports the farms in the border region both on the Italian and the Slovenian side.

The aim is to use products that come from the nearby area and that correspond to the "zero kilometers" philosophy of the family. Since the opening of the restaurant, the Sirk family has been cooperating with modest farmers and these relationships have continued to today with their children. When looking for new products and producers, the "zero kilometers" rule also applies. La Subida has been working for many years with a vegetable farmer who only has a few fields of courgettes. In September the courgette flowers are in season in Friuli and are then ordered fresh from the farmer every day as required.

Inkaterra - regional whenever possible

The Peruvian hotel chain, a pioneer in the field of sustainability, has integrated the focus on regionality into its concept from the very beginning. One of the cornerstones of this is supporting the local population. Wherever possible, Inkaterra buys products such as fruit and vegetables from regional suppliers and communities in the Andes and Amazon region. Wood and building materials are also purchased from legally certified, local suppliers from the Amazon region. Inkaterra also employs and trains local staff and assists them in the areas of education, ecology, and recycling.

Sagna Rotonda - seasonal and regional in Piedmont

The owners of Sagna Rotonda Giovanni and Teresina decided this year to close their restaurant la Tavernetta. Since then the premises have been used as a store by a friend. There, local products such as honey, wine, beer, or pasta are sold. If desired, group travelers will continue to be treated in the former restaurant with freshly baked bread and fruit and vegetables from their own garden. All other required products are only purchased seasonally and from regional suppliers.

Naturhotel Outside - regional from the beginning

From the very beginning, Naturhotel Outside has focused on regional and seasonal food. Short transport routes are good for the environment, and the products are also fresher and regional jobs and businesses are supported. Shopping regionally also means seasonally, and those who buy food from local farmers are respectful of the environment. And last but not least, regionality means being connected to local communities and people.

Die Forelle in Weissensee and Generation Conscience

Import self-sufficiency and generation conscience are terms that Hannes Müller of the gourmet hotel Die Forelle in Carinthia has coined. Chef Hannes Müller and his team focus on sustainability, regionality, and seasonality.

One of the star chef's ambitious goals is called "import self-sufficiency". Behind this lies the decision to gradually forego the import of goods. This was also the birth of the project "Generation Conscience". The evening menu is 99 % free of imported goods, and only what is regionally and seasonally available is served. Therefore, this means no fresh fruit in winter, but instead a delicious variety of root vegetables. The season determines what is put on the table. The philosophy behind this is based on the belief that in times when everything is always available at all times, the return to the essentials and mindful reduction become the special thing. Wherever possible, they buy from farmers in the immediate vicinity at fair prices and without middlemen, because this is how the added value reaches the farmers. Hannes Müller focuses less on certification and more on transparent information on the way animals in meat products are treated and fed. The close cooperation with fruit, vegetable, and cereal farmers is also based on transparent and comprehensive information on cultivation and harvesting conditions. By focusing exclusively on regional and seasonal products, Hannes Müller avoids international luxury products and relies instead on the locally, fairly produced products of the Alps-Adriatic region, such as olive oil or balsamic vinegar.

Today our journey takes us to the far north, more precisely to the Bodden Coast and then to the Black Forest, to Bad Herrenalb.

A paradise for families by the Baltic Sea

How about a holiday with the children which combines space and flexibility with the amenities of a hotel? This is how Sabine Stange and Jürg Gloor imagined the perfect family hotel. Their first holidays together with their daughter in the early 90s did not fulfill these wishes. Either they had to decide to stay in an apartment and thus forego the luxury of a pre-prepared breakfast table in the morning, or compromise with a hotel room so small that a day of bad weather presented them with serious problems.

So, the desire arose to create a special refuge for families, which would provide both parents and children with all they could want. The vision was to offer parents and grandparents with small children a relaxing holiday, in spacious apartments, surrounded by nature, peace and quiet along with enough free space without having to give up the luxury of a hotel. They thought of a landscape at the Baltic Sea far away from mass tourism. The Berliner and the Swiss went on a hunt and found what they were looking for at Grabower Bodden not far from the World Heritage city of Stralsund. Here stood the old and dilapidated Nisdorf Estate.

The first documented mention of the former estate dates from 1302 when it belonged to Johannes de Ost de Neslestorp. After him, it changed hands several times.

After the fall of the Wall, the estate stood empty and slowly decayed until Sabine Stange and Jürg Gloor discovered it and bought it in 1998. The extensive renovation included all buildings, but the historic structure was preserved wherever possible and environmentally-friendly materials were used.

A vision comes true 

In July 2003 the time had finally come and the Organic Children and Family Hotel with 12 spacious holiday apartments opened its doors and welcomed the first happy families. Sabine Stange and Jürg Gloor had succeeded in creating a haven where parents and children could spend carefree days enjoying their vacation time with each other. The hotel is surrounded by a 25,000m² garden, where young and old feel right at home. Next to the sun terrace, a large playground, a natural swimming pond, and a sunbathing and playing area entice the younger guests.

Dream for kids and adults   

Children can enjoy the ponies, sheep, cats and many other friendly animals which call Gut Nisdorf home. The surrounding area also offers everything that an active family could need! Only 200 meters away is the Nisdorf fishing port and a small swimming area. The Ostseeradfernweg (Baltic Sea Cycle Route) D2 from Flensburg to Ahlbeck on Usedom passes right by the hotel. If you follow it for about 500 meters along the water, you will find another small swimming area.

The kitchen offers a rich breakfast buffet and, in the evening, delicious warm meals made exclusively from high-quality organic food which has been mainly sourced from the region and then freshly prepared by experienced hands.

In the nursery, the little ones are well looked after. While pony rides, a fleet of bicycles, scooters and Kettcars, a wellness area with sauna, whirlpool and massages complete the wide range of activities on offer.

Sabine Stange and Jürg Gloor do not necessarily want to convert their guests, but rather be a shining example and inspiration for more sustainability when traveling along with a mindset that can also accompany families on their way home.

SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA: "The mission is not to missionize."

This is what Stephan Bode, sustainability pioneer, owner and managing director of SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA in Bad Herrenalb and his CSR officer Stephanie Schießl say. Stephan Bode, who has also been awarded the B.A.U.M. Environmental Prize and Spirit-at-Work Awards, is committed to change with a great deal of enthusiasm, creativity, and passion together with his dedicated team. For years he has been one of the pioneers of sustainability in the hotel industry, he is committed to introducing more and more sustainability measures and in doing so realizes his dream of a holistically sustainable hotel.

A  -  Z like zero waste 

Due to its secluded location in the middle of the pristine nature of the Black Forest Nature Park, the hotel sees itself as having a special responsibility for the region. "Sustainable action is a principle and a self-obligation for us. We have anchored sustainability in all aspects of our value-added chain. Firstly, a healthy natural environment is the foundation of a healthy economy and secondly, we are all guests on our host: EARTH. Just as we hoteliers and hosts expect our guests not to leave any lasting damage in our hotel, this should also be the standard for our environment," explains Stephan Bode, who created and filled the position of CSR officer to further develop the sustainability awareness in the company. Stephanie Schießl has been working towards this vision on a daily basis for over 2 years. Internal processes are optimized and all stakeholders of the company are made aware of, trained for, and inspired by their commitment to sustainability. This includes aspects such as A for Abfallreduzierung (waste reduction), B for Blue Angel eco-label, and Z for Zero Waste Breakfast Buffet. Stephanie Schießl's task is complex, cross-departmental and time-consuming. She has learned to distinguish greenwashing from authenticity and to implement everything step by step, since, as with all new approaches, products and information in the area of sustainability can quickly feel overwhelming. More than 100 measures are listed in the environmental diary of the SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA in order to offer as many alternatives as possible in all areas and to help inform everyone around them.

"The mission is not to missionize. But it’s still to get the message through to people's minds and hearts and to help everyone see that they must strive to become part of the solution. And to do as much as they can with no excuses for doing nothing because otherwise we will become stuck in the Attitude-Behaviour-Gap and then no one will take any initiative. Hotels should also benefit from effective, proven solutions, and in general, I would like to see less public discussion about who should take responsibility (politicians or consumers) and more of an environment in which everyone starts themselves through intrinsic motivation - as a person, as a company, as a guest. A lot would have happened once people realize this."

This ties in with the guiding principle of the owner Stephan Bode, which is slowly implanting itself in the DNA of his employees and is bearing more and more fruit as a response: Be the change you wish to see in the world - Mahathma Gandhi.

After telephone calls with Elena Scalambrin, the owner, and some Internet research, we decided on short notice, only three weeks ago: We're going! Our way led us across Switzerland, where we realized with astonishment that we were the only ones wearing masks. Arriving in Imperia, Liguria, we were relieved to see that masks are part of the everyday life of the population, many even wear them on the streets.

Relais del Maro

In the hotel it is compulsory to wear the masks inside closed rooms, but many guests also wear them outside on their way to their table. Apart from the disinfectant which is available to the guests everywhere, the frequent disinfection of the tables by the staff and the masks, we hardly noticed any difference to the times before Corona. Even though breakfast needed to be ordered the day before rather than enjoying the full buffet, everything was still just as fresh and delicious. Nevertheless, many guests canceled or postponed to the next year. The horror surrounding the pictures coming from Italy seems to be overwhelming for many.

In the hotel, we felt safe and were curious about how it felt in the hustle and bustle of the beaches and small cities.

The Beach

Still tired from the long drive, we made our way the next morning to one of our favourite spots - Bagno, Bagni Manè. At the entrance, there was a book where guests were required to sign in with their name, address, and telephone number. The wearing of masks is also obligatory when entering the outside terrace or until you reach your sunbed. However, this is not always taken very seriously in the beach area, as masks are no longer mandatory outdoors in Liguria. But many people still wear them in the outdoor areas of restaurants and on the narrow streets.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 12 days of relaxation and recovery. The discipline of most Italians regarding distance and masks is exemplary.

Most of the people handle the challenge of COVID-19 with ease and along with a sense of responsibility. We spoke with the other guests of the Relais del Maro and all shared and confirmed our wonderfully positive experiences.

Chris and Ingrid Van Laethem-Dreezen from Hasselt in Belgium wrote down their feelings and experiences for us.

"At first, we had serious doubts about leaving for Italy. The horrible images of Bergamo and Milano had created an image of Italy as the most dangerous country in Europe. But the Ligurian backcountry is quite different from the big cities in Lombardia, and our previous visits to Borgomaro supported our confidence in the staff of the Relais del Maro. After a tiring and tense five months of working in our community pharmacy during COVID-outbreak, we desperately needed some time off!

So we left our Belgian home on July 10^th early in the morning for a non-stop trip of 1150 km to the safe-haven in Borgomaro. The ride was uneventful and swift to Milano, but the last 150 km were an ordeal. Some clever officials decided to renew sections of the highway along the coast during the high season, resulting in monstrous traffic jams.

After a fourteen-hour trip, we finally arrived at the Relais, where we were welcomed by the ever-friendly hostesses Elena and her mama Piera, and Martina. They succeeded wonderfully in taking every precaution possible to ensure their guests a safe stay while maintaining their fantastic level of hospitality. Yes, they had to cancel the breakfast buffet; but only those who experienced it before will miss it. Any newcomer to the Relais will be thrilled by the excellent service and wonderful variety of the food

Activities

The Impero valley is beautiful as always, for those who like to walk and enjoy nature. By car, it is only a fifteen-minute drive to Imperia, with plenty of restaurants and a lively marina and beaches. We had dinner on a beachside terrace, and the staff was friendly but disciplined. There was never a moment we felt unsafe. For those who feel less adventurous, Elena made good arrangements with the local restaurant owners, who provide catering even on the poolside deck.

For now, we doubt about going back to Belgium, this little oasis feels so comfortable we consider a longtime stay…:-)"

Corona Rules for Italian Vacations 2020

• Italy limits the number of passengers in the car
• There are no restrictions for travelers from one household - no mask obligation
• Mandatory masks for persons from different households
• Maximum of 2 passengers per row in some provinces
• The airports in Italy are back in operation and there are more rail connections. The Deutsche Bahn is again serving all destinations in Italy, as is Flixbus.
• Masks are compulsory in all shops, trains, and other closed rooms. This directive has been extended until at least the 31^st of July.
• Reservations for trips to the beach must be made in advance. Beach umbrellas must be spaced far enough apart from each other (ten square meters per umbrella), and have a minimum distance of 3 meters from the nearest sunbed.
• Masks are compulsory in all restaurants and cafes. Disinfectants must be available everywhere. In some shops, customers are required to wear disposable gloves. Fevers may be measured anywhere and access may be refused if the body temperature exceeds 37.5 degrees.
• There are different additional regulations in the different provinces, please check before you travel

Carl von Carlowitz defined sustainability for the forest back in 1713. The scale must always balance out, you can only fell as many trees as will grow back.

Sustainability and Tourism

There are now countless labels and certifications, and it can be difficult for guests to navigate their way through them. One of Green Pearls’® goals is to present the sustainable initiatives of their hotels transparently and clearly.

The criteria that sustainable hotels should meet are defined by three main themes: sustainable management, environment and socio-economic activity. At the beginning of this process is a sustainable strategic plan, which should not only be developed by the management. In order to achieve long-term success, it is also important to involve the all-important employees. The next important topics are the architecture of the buildings. In the case of a new hotel building the construction methods, materials, regionality, energy management, water, waste, food and social commitment both within the hotel and externally need to be considered.

We would like to explain exactly what this means using our hotels as examples. Each Green Pearls® hotel has a different focus. Sustainability has many facets, and it is always the hoteliers' personal stories that shape and support their philosophy.

Tongsai Bay, Koh Samui, Thailand

Environment and animal welfare

Built and opened in 1987 as the first luxury eco-resort on the island of Koh Samui in Thailand, it is at the forefront of sustainable development. Designed and built by the visionary Khun Akorn Hoontrakul who first fell in love with the beautiful property, and subsequently bought it. He then slept on the beach for three months during construction to ensure that no trees were felled and that as little interference with nature as possible was required.

Today you can marvel at the over 60 species of birds on the huge property. Animal welfare and the protection of the environment is a key part of the resort's green philosophy, as is the respectful treatment of the staff. Many employees have been with the hotel from the very beginning.

Culture and Tradition: The revival of a village

The Scalambrin family is inseparably linked to the village of Borgomaro. Family members have lived and worked in the houses in the village for many years. By converting the houses into an “Albergo Diffuso”, the family wanted to preserve the history, tradition and culture. The main house was Piera Scalambrin's parents' home where she grew up on the first floor, with her parents' butcher's shop below. Elena Scalambrin and her parents decided to renovate the village houses and give travelers the opportunity to participate in the life of a Ligurian village. For the family, it was clear from the beginning that the buildings should be renovated sustainably. The consulting for the Relais del Maro was done by Casa Clima, a public institution from Bolzano, which focuses on energy efficiency and environmental certification of both new and renovated buildings, along with the education, advice and training of people working in the construction industry. And so, the small Albergo Diffuso, with its 14 rooms, sets environmental protection standards in addition to its cultural commitment.

OCÉANO Hotel Health Spa, Tenerife, Spain

Preservation and Transformation

The history of the hotel dates back to 1965 when the grandparents of the current owner discovered the property in Tenerife and decided to create a tranquil sanctuary. Many years have passed since then and the OCÉANO has become one of the leading sustainable hotels in wellness tourism. After the owners K. Matthias Rolle and his wife Magda Corominas Roig invested a lot of time and energy into the continuous development of OCÉANO for current and future guests, the sustainable structural modifications followed in 2019. It was important to retain the unique ambience and special features of OCÉANO while adapting the architecture to the times. The change in the appearance of the façade was combined with an additional layer of insulation, and only natural and environmentally friendly building materials were used with a focus on energy-saving technology. Water stations for guests were installed to avoid the use of plastic bottles in the future, and during their stay, OCÉANO provides each guest with a reusable bottle that can be refilled at any time free of charge at any of these stations.

Outside, Tyrol, Austria

Gastronomy meets environmental protection or sustainability through the stomach

Nature is a powerhouse, and it is something that needs to be protected. The Ganzer family of hoteliers from Tyrol has always lived by a sustainable philosophy and have invested a lot of heart and soul in the sustainable development of their hotel. Ensuring environmental protection is just as important as providing exceptional hospitality. The Hotel Outside spoils its guests with everything that comes fresh from nature, following the motto heart and belly go hand in hand.

Since 2018, Verena Ganzer has been the Head Chef of the hotel's own gourmet restaurant INSIDE, and is responsible, among other things, for the composition of the 6-course gourmet menu "Mitten im Draußen", or “In the Midst of the Outdoors”. The vegetarian menu changes daily and can also be ordered with meat or fish. All dishes are local, seasonal and intricately linked with the region. High-quality ingredients are used. Vegetables, cheese, fish, meat and fruit come from sustainable agriculture in the region. Verena Ganzer mixes alpine and Mediterranean specialties with the typical wild herbs of the region, reinterprets old classics depending on the seasonal availability of the ingredients and creates innovative, delicious alpine cuisine.

Cultural engagement: Preservation instead of demolition

In 2002, Dalia Remeikaitė and her daughter Dovilė Šipelienė opened the sustainable 4-star ROMANTIC Hotel. The two owners are convinced that the combination of environmental protection and a modern sustainable lifestyle is feasible for everyone.

The hotel is located right in the center of the city in the former, renovated Panevėžys mill. It was the first industrial mill in the Baltic States and historians agree that it was also one of the most modern mills of the time.

In 2001, Dalia and her daughter Dovilė took over the old, dilapidated mill and lovingly and sustainability renovated it for future generations to enjoy.

Romantic days in Paris

Paris in winter? Absolutely! The city of love is one of the most visited cities in the world - and in winter you don't have to share the Eiffel Tower with countless tourists and even the queues in front of the museums are shorter. Spend romantic days admiring Christmassy Paris with its decorated Champs-Élysées and sparkling department stores. Those who need peace after so much hustle and bustle will find it in the Hôtel Le Pavillon. The hotel is a green oasis in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower with a focus on the well-being and health of its guests.

Whether packaging-free shops, fair fashion concept stores or organic restaurants, everything can be reached in no time at all by (rented) bicycle from the Creativhotel. And, of course, the employees have many tips ready for you. By the way, three Christmas markets await you in the run-up to Christmas: the historic Christmas Market, the Erlangen Forest Christmas and the Old Town Christmas Market. There's also a skating rink in the middle of town!

Manhattan of the Middle Ages

You can experience a city trip of a special kind in the Agrivilla i pini: the vegan hotel is picturesquely situated among olive groves and vineyards near the medieval city center of San Gimignano in Tuscany. San Gimignano is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is also called "Medieval Manhattan" thanks to the towers in the old town. Since the city is situated on a hill, you have a great view over the vineyards and olive trees. But also in the i pini itself, you have a stunning panoramic view - from the saltwater pool you can look over the striking landscape and just relax.

Schwerin is the smallest of all state capitals in Germany - but definitely worth a visit. From the upper floors of the Hotel Speicher, you can see the whole old town up to the castle. Instead of demolishing and building anew, our hoteliers invest in renovation and refurbishment focusing on upcycling. To spend a night in an environment rich in history is especially exciting! At the Inkaterra La Casona in Peru you live in a mansion from the 16^th century that belonged to the army of the Inca, at the Wild Mahseer you sleep in buildings from the colonial era build by the British Assam Tea Company and the Bio-Agrivilla i pini accommodates you in a villa from the High Renaissance dating back to the early 16^th century.

Hotelier Ben Förtsch owner of the Creativhotel Luise also knows that demolishing and building new would probably have been more favorable, however, for him, sustainability takes center stage. With creativity and some upcycling projects, a lot of garbage could be saved – for example, a bridge made of old wooden beams or the plant throughs in the new patio that are made of former boilers.

We are not the only ones who are enthusiastic about the relaxation possibilities in Bad Herrenalb, the bloggers Christian from People Abroad and Mina from the Blogazine Viertel Vor were guests at the SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA in Bad Herrenalb and share their experiences.

Our partner Wild Mahseer planted 284,722 trees in just 30 minutes with the Balipara Foundation, other organisations and the support of over 47,000 people in the Indian region of Balipara! But that's not all, the project is supported by an educational campaign to ensure the villages can continue to care for the seedlings and understand the importance of the forest and the role it plays in their lives. Read more about this great project here.

Foreign reads: news from all over the world

Last week was Earth Overshoot Day – and we’ve been living on credit ever since. Every year, we humans need 1.75 Earths for our global resource consumption. In Germany, our national Overshoot Day already occurred this year on 3rd May! If you want to know what your personal ecological footprint looks like, you can calculate it with the Footprintcalculator, under the Hashtag #MoveTheDate you can finde inspirations on how to lower your imprint from people around the world.

Divers found a colourful "coral reef" off the Greek island of Andros - unfortunately it consisted of hundreds of kilos of plastic bags, fishing nets and the like which probably made their way into the water when an unofficial landfill collapsed in 2011. The organic children's and family hotel describes itself as a huge playground and combines the comfort and convenience of a hotel with the freedom of a holiday apartment. You can either prepare breakfast yourself in the apartment kitchen or enjoy the organic breakfast buffet. In addition, there is a child care centre, a strawberry garden for snacking, a natural swimming pond and the Baltic Sea right next door. The founders Sabine Stange and Jürg Gloor really have thought of everything and know exactly what is important for a relaxed holiday with the whole family – after all, they are parents themselves and have been looking for an option such as Gut Nisdorf for a long time!

The Hotel Milano Scala, Milan's first zero-emission hotel, has recently introduced an innovative filter system that ensures fresh and pollutant-free air in the City Hotel. Also new: the DO7 Eco Club, which can be used for green business meetings, among other things, or also simply for a tasty drink with your travel companion.

Writing your own book is certainly something special. Florian Hallermann, GM of Zeavola on Koh Phi Phi, writes in "Zeavola's Little Green Book" about the way to a luxurious eco-resort and gives many exciting insights into local life. You can download the book on the resort page.

Iceland and the Influencers

Iceland is beautiful – but has a problem with influencers. Influencers that want to photograph themselves in scene with the most spectacular nature shots possible. To end this and protect the natural environment, local activists and tourism providers such as Visit Iceland have launched a campaign to make tourists aware of the rules of conduct.

Hazardous contrails

Researchers at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) have warned of the effects of contrails on our climate: although they look harmless, they heat up the earth more than the carbon dioxide released by aircraft. They are particularly concerned about the trails that form at an altitude of about eight kilometres. Water vapor and soot from aircraft exhaust fumes meet cold air, creating long-lived ice clouds. These prevent heat from being radiated from the earth into space and thus lead to a greenhouse effect.

Worldwide, people are opting to go plastic free for the whole of July. "Plastic Free July" is a global movement that aims to encourage people to change their behaviour towards plastics and waste, for clean roads, seas and countries.
